Why does everything seem to be made into some kind of competition?

What is this need to have the best house, car, kids, dog?
The most attractive wife?
The best job?
Wear the best clothes?
Go on the best or most exotic holiday evah?
Drink the most alcohol?
Wear the most expensive lycra whilst riding the best pushbike on your way to drink the best coffee in the best coffee shop?
Even walk the most steps in a day?
Is this quest for the perfect life, (which is unachievable) making people more selfish and unhappy?

Let the days go by, let the water hold me down

Let the days go by, water flowing underground

Time is and will always be the most valuable thing. The older you get the more trivial you realise all these things are.

The rest is what you see in any other animal upto a certain extent. Why do birds preen themselves or some construct elaborate nests ? Its about attracting a healthy mate, if the female looks good then theres a good chance she's healthy (dont think catfishing exists in the animal kingdom). Beyond that its about social standing or dominance within the group.

As much as we like to think we have evolved into some higher being away from animals we haven't, it ingrained in our genetics and we spent a lot longer struggling to survive as a species than we have being relatively in control of our surroundings.

Advertising and social media are the two biggest things, everyone thinking they need the latest phone etc, wait until they realise that my old iPhone 11 does exactly the same as their brand new £1500 iPhone 14! That my 11 year old car gets me from A to B in exactly the same way and time (if driven the correct speed) than the brand new £40k car sat on the drive that probably never goes further than the Manchester border.

It’s not creating happiness, just avoiding unhappiness.
