Why does everything seem to be made into some kind of competition?

That my 11 year old car gets me from A to B in exactly the same way and time (if driven the correct speed) than the brand new £40k car sat on the drive that probably never goes further than the Manchester border.
Spot on with this analogy.
I drive a 22 year old Toyota.
It looks like a mobile scrap yard, after my dad's bad parking attempts (I inherited the car from him, after it was decided he was too old to drive). I've put it through 6 MOTs and spent no more than £200 in total to get it through those tests. It starts first time, every time.
When I drive to to the golf club where I play, it's surrounded by Jags, BMWs, Mercs etc, and I can guarantee their owners are financed/leased to hell, for the pleasure.

Daft fuckers

I'm happy with what I've got in life & am not at all materialistic.
I do set myself targets for my swimming and running but that's more to motivate myself rather than be in competition with anyone else.

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, “only a little while. The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The American then asked, “but what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.” The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City, where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “15 – 20 years.”

“But what then?” Asked the Mexican.

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions!”

“Millions – then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

I keep getting this feeling of deja vu…

For me it started at Wilbraham junior school in year 7 with the pissing up the wall competitions in the outside urinals.
I couldn’t compete then and now I just dribble.

Since I entered my 30s I've stopped giving a fuck about all of that stuff. I buy a pack of 10 white t-shirts and 10 black t-shirts off Amazon and that's me done for the year, I have a shitey bog standard phone and I don't own really anything other than a guitar I've had since I was 15. My girlfriend thinks I'm mad but I genuinely don't want anything else in my life and I'm the happiest I've ever been

The Capitalist ideal... the unattainable carrot
So true, just when you think you've achieved or got what you always strived for, you then reset the bar to go again.

It's almost like we are made to feel guilty by society, for just being happy where we are, and not wanting kids, marriage, new car, new job, fancy holiday!

Suppose you've just got to choose your circle wisely, or you can get dragged further into it.
