Why does Stuart Pearce hate City so much?

I’d say about ten absolute classic performances under McNeill, including the Charlton 5-1 and Liverpool Boxing Day win in 1985. Plus Chelsea and Portsmouth away in his first and second seasons respectively. Plus the Old Trafford Derby when we came from two behind the day before the Full Members Cup Final. They’re the ones that spring immediately to mind, but I’d be surprised if there were more than double that in total. Don’t think that’s a brilliant return over three and a bit seasons.

I think that the financial state of the club when we dropped in 1983 and the number of players who were out of contract were such that we could have easily become stuck in Division Two (as was) or even worse. IMO, in those circumstances, when he had to make a profit from transfers and cut the wage bill, taking us back up and keeping us there was a fine achievement.

That said, I thought as much as anyone else that he was a **** for walking out on us. I well remember when he came back with Villa in November 1986 to lose 3-1 to us and the whole Kippax spent the last 15 minutes chanting, "Billy McNeill is a wanker, is a wanker!" No one was singing it with more gusto than I was.

However, that was because he was a traitor, like Kendall. I maintain that he did a good job and that was why people were bothered that he'd gone, though I was pleased he got a hospital pass at Villa.

It was a great atmosphere that day mate. Game started late after the Villa coach was late after it was involved in a fatal collision on Princess Parkway iirc.

Don’t know when he started hating city but I can’t stand the prick.

Nothing to do with when he was in charge either as you could argue he tried his best, it was awful, proper awful football.

His personality grates me. It’s best I ignore the wanker.

The club was in a mess from top to bottom, flirting with administration.

He did his VERY LIMITED best, but clearly wasn't rated by the best players and was just out of his depth.

He was /is a chronicly shite pundit whose analysis and inability to string two coherent sentences together was/is embarrassi
He looks and sounds foolish.

His bitterness of City is probably due to a deep seated inferiority complex mixed with anger issues.

Now a skint nonentity, easily ignored !!
You forgot the 400 Odd First team league appearances and the 87 goals from left back ,most, if not all in the top division, with 87 goals scored. One of the most high scoring left backs in British football history.Outstanding.
When you assess a mans career, don't just pick out the bits to suit your agenda.
Give a bit of balance....: )

Getting us up and keeping us up was a brilliant achievement given the money and players he had, but it was a big betrayal.

I felt that same anger and sang thzt chant with the same gusto in an exciting game and good City performance that was a rare highlight that season. Forgave him years later when he expressed regret, even if that regret was going to work for Doug Ellis, who though more competent than Swales, was probably more interfering and slimey not to mention even more trigger happy.

As well as Saunders, Dave Bassett did it two years after McNeill, albeit not from the same division. Billy, meanwhile, may have done badly at Villa but overachieved at City given the resources at his disposal.

Personally, I think McNeill did well not to walk out on City until he'd done more than three years at the club. That, of course, is given the blatant lies Swales told him when he joined about the money he'd be able to spend. I understand fans resenting that he quit on us even though I myself blame the board 100% for that. However, while he was here, he put it a highly creditable performance. And I'll die on that hill.
Totally agree. Highly creditable.

I enjoyed City 2 Tottenham 1 on the day we had to change into red and black stripes, because they came with white shirts and light Blue shorts....WTF. We had to battle and scrap hard against Waddle and co but beating Tottenham is always a pleasure.

Wasn't it 99 goals, as he famously missed a penalty to get to 100 in his last game for us

Whatever the figure was 87 goals or 99 goals ...
That is a fantastic return from a left back!

I remember David Peach at Southampton in the 70s scoring a lot of goals from left back, maybe 50 in 400 games over his career at the Dell.....almost all of those 50 odd goals were penalties..

Stuart Pearce got almost double his total, ,..a left back scoring a goal every 4 or 5 games..Wow.
True football supporters have to acknowledge and respect that goal scoring total.....Pearce packed a venomous left foot free kick, time and again.....no other left back in England could match his power and precision from a dead ball. He was also a determined solid defender ,not many right wingers got the better of him throughout his career.....the ability to defend to the highest level....and score many many goals from the left back position is one that should be respected ,when anyone looks back at the career of one of the finest full backs this country has ever seen,imo,..

I had the pleasure of watching his career, from forest to England International. His goal, the penalty against Spain, got the whole country buzzing for euro96.

Would have easily been part of peps team mainly because he just did what was asked and did it well. Proper professional imo
