Why no pen?

To square it up. He realised his mistake and wanted to even it out. Truly dreadful officiating.

I suspect this might have something to do with it sadly.

Those saying he was shit - that's bang on the money of course but it wasnt purely incompetence that made him wave the pen claim away. He clearly saw it and it was an absolute clearcut stonewall pen. So I'm just wondering if there was something - anything - I've overlooked that might have given him cause to deny the claim.

Doesnt he have to justify his decision to his bosses afterwards? What will that justification be?

What I want to know is why Messi nor Dzeko were booked for diving, what has the ref seen that makes him think it's not a penalty but it wasn't a dive because neither go the ball in either case??

Yes Barca should have been given a spot-kick in the first half and yes they scored a perfectly legit goal that was chalked off. But just concentrating on the baffling decision not to award us with a pen I'm really curious if anyone has an inkling as to WHY this decision was reached?

Because the ref saw the offence clear as day. And it's not even up for debate whether Pique collided with Dzeko and took his legs away.

So it is not down to interpretation surely? The ref couldnt have believed for example that Dzeko made a meal of the challenge.

So what was his thought process?

The only possibility for me - and its a reach - is that he perceieved Pique to be falling after losing his balance and thus accidentally collided with Dzeko. So there was no intent.

Anyone else got a theory because, aside from the above, I'm fucking stumped.
Whilst two wrongs don't make a right, I think you pretty much answered your own question.

That and the fact the referee was unbelievably poor.

I personally believe he thought Lescott got the ball but the challenge was sufficient that Messi went down naturally from it.

With Dzeko it just adds more mystery to his decision.

To be honest I shouted get up when Messi went down but it was indeed a penalty but it was easier to see that he might of got the ball. Trying to not show bias but the Dzeko one for me was clear. Pique is behind the player and the ball just carries on going, can't understand what he has seen.

Against Barcelona your not aloud to give opposing teams a penalty, it's biggest unwritten rule in football. Every year happens, anyone remember Chelsea in 2009?

on barcelona's pitch against barcelona is all you need to know
Yet we got lucky on several occasions. Bottom line is he was poor for both sides.

that doesn't negate the reason why we didn't get ours and that was no way he was going to give ours once he had messed up theirs

-- Thu Mar 13, 2014 12:41 pm --
