Why PC gaming

It's all relative. What's good to you, isn't good to me. What do you need to be able to do with it? What games do you want to run at what resolutions?

Whatever the scenario, your best bet with that budget will be to use an AMD Kaveri processor when they are released. If you're used to 'gaming' on a laptop, they will be a huge upgrade.

I'd like a pc able to run the games in best quality, Im sure that 300 isn't enough, how much/cheapest could I get one that would be able to run games in a high spec

First Person shooters use to be way better on PC before xbox 360 & PS3!

Do you need the lot as in screen, keyboard etc ?
Also is 300 your absolute max price wise ?

I'd love to get into PC gaming for all the reasons you posted Skash, it's a great money saver and it just makes sense in nearly every way if you're a technical person (which I am to some extent).

Problems I have are:

1. Time. I'm pretty busy and it always feels less convenient and occasionally a bit 'faffy ' (to quote my grandad). I suppose once you have a good set-up you can make it much easier and more fluid to play games, watch TV etc. all through the same hub. Then it's just a matter of investing the time to get that set up.

and

2. That I'm absolutely woeful at keeping up to date with current trends. Things like the names of particular graphics cards/processors etc. are all completely alien to me. Honestly don't know my arse from elbow and if I walked into any PC retailer asking for help I wouldn't have a clue whether I was being sold a lame duck.

Problem now is, I've sold off all my consoles, because I just felt incongruous with the way consoles and gaming were going. I don't really like FPSs that much, always been more a strategy game kind of guy with a love for retro adventure games (LoZ OoT probably being my favourite of them all) and the odd RPG.

Thanks for your post though, it's persuaded me to at least attempt to get through the barrier of jargon that comes with PC gaming and look into getting something up and running.

The best RTS games ever made are on the PC

Supreme Commander 1+2, Starcraft 1+2, Sins of a solar Empire + plus all the mods, Medieval 2 total war + Kingdoms expansion + mods, Company of heroes + mods,

And so so many more.

EDIT: This imo is possibly the best RTS on the PC and its a mod.

Ahem, Rome: Total War. Let's get that right. Or I'll enslave your settlement.

Played Rome, Medieval 2, Civilisation and Age of Empires in my time but all on a rubbish laptop or PC with graphics on low settings. Pretty depressing really.

Tried to install Third Age once too, being a huge LOTR fan, but from what I remember it didn't install properly and I should have been revising for exams so I saw that as a sign. Would love nothing more than to be able to play games like that on an ultra high-spec PC in high-res. Maybe if I get a good Christmas bonus...

Thanks for the offer too Skash, may well take you up on that.

I have an xbox an ps3 and have mainly used them for gaming for the last few years due to the fact thats what my friends use but as an old counterstrike player I can categorically say that nothing beats a PC for fps games. Now I'm in a different timezone and can't play much with them any more I'm going back to PC gaming.

I will probably get a PS4 after christmas though :)

Does anybody understand what this AMD mantle is all about, am I right in saying it's supposed to be something that improves the performance of ports to PC ?

If so is it worth going for an AMD GPU in the next upgrade given that both of these consoles use AMD parts too?

It's difficult to say how well it will be taken up at the moment. It will be down to developers to utilise it. Developers more committed to the PC will do a better job. However, it is clear that both the Xbox One and PS4 have moved in the direction of PC architecture and that is good news for PC gamers and ports. Revenues are up and have grown by 90% in the past five years, doing especially well in emerging markets like China which takes up 34% of PC gaming revenue, Steam marches on and has more active accounts than Xbox Live. PC gaming is very healthy at the moment.

Saw an article last night that said Steam has more subscribers than Xbox live so I wouldn't say its a niche, I just think it's older players in their 30/40s who have enough of knobheads on Xbox live. Damn I may wait for new year sales and pull the trigger SWTOR here I come.

I can get a screen/Mouse/Keyboard off someone I know, so it leaves me 300-350 to spend on everything else.

just picked up Dishonored for under 4 quid and far cry 3 for 7 both on steam fuckin bargain
still be getting a ps4 in the new year tho

Reading this thread has me really itching to reinstall Half Life 2. One of the finest gaming experiences going. I was kinda saving it until HL3 was about to be released to refresh my memory but as that could see me not play it until retirement I may get the jump on it.
