Wildlife

My neighbour found a dead Curlew in her garden yesterday, in pristine condition. Beautiful bird. Curlew is a wading bird with a distinctive long curled beak. Never seen one before and probably a first on our street. We are not close to a beach or moorland.

I live north of San Francisco near some open space and we have all sorts of creatures. The most irritating by far is the flock of 20 or so wild turkeys, who never shut up, are dumber than shit, and speaking of shit, shit everywhere. They are likely Republicans.

But we also have great horned owls, red-tailed and Cooper's hawks, crows, turkey vultures, and some two dozen species of birds that we've counted at our feeders (woodpeckers, scrub jays, various songbirds). In 20 years here I have twice seen a bald eagle, which was pretty awesome. During big storms, we will get the occasional great blue heron who will fly up from the SF Bay and take refuge in our backyard (garden) (we're in a bit of a hollow out of the wind).

Among mammals, we have coyotes (scary and eerie when they howl at night), mule deer, jackrabbits, skunks (not for a while -- the GH owls eat them), opossum, lots of chattering squirrels, and every once in a while grey foxes. And raccoons -- those little bastards will get into any trash (rubbish) bin outside and not locked down.

We have snakes (garter mostly; the periodic king; I've seen rattlers in my county but never near my house) and salamanders and lizards. We are very lucky to have monarch and swallowtail butterflies -- a monarch actually built its cocoon on our house this year -- among others. And lots of black widow spiders -- they are endemic here.
Surprised you don’t see more bald eagles never been to California but would see them and Osprey every day in Florida

The balds have made a real comeback in the US but not so much where I live. I went to Alaska several years ago and they are literally like pigioens or seagulls -- they're everywhere. Red-tailed hawks however are extremely common where I live -- I see them every day. Osprey are common in and around the Bay Area but not where I am.

The badgers are really getting on my nerves , i put down a walking track as my garden is muddy , thingies with holes in and i pea gravelled it all, broke my back and caused me considerable pain and the shits have been digging up this last week, another one today dug up and moved a considerable distance !

I did hand feed three last night though , awww
