Worth remembering we won the league last season by playing with TWO strikers for the majority of games. If Jovetic and/or Dzeko do go, I would fully expect us to sign yet another striker in summer. Manuel did not want Negredo to go, a mix of FFP and the player's wishes forced our hand. Dzeko frustrates at times, but he too is a class striker and his input to our success is there for all to see, just watch some youtube vids of our title winning seasons. Bony I think offers more athleticism, Edin may rise to the challenge and off we go to more success. If not, there is now another option we can use.
I imagine the medical this morning is more to get it done before he flies out to Africa. We can keep talking to Swansea and him, but get the fit test done now and there are less issues later. But Sky will see it as a done deal.
If we do get him now in January, then i can only think that we expect competition to be tighter in the summer. Chelsea seem about done for big signings this season, Arsenal and Liverpool are not as an attractive offer as us right now, and United seem to have their hands tied with a silly Falcao deal and more pressing needs elsewhere, ie defence. But in 5/6 moths time we may have found a different situation, Liverpool ready to spend, United worming out of the Falcao deal, or Chelsea spending to stop us getting him.
I don't like the thought of splashing out £30m on Bony, on the face of it, but when you think about it any striker we as City sign, and reasonably expect to be part of a team gunning for 3/4 trophies a season, unless we've got him young or through our own system, then he's gong to cost us £25/30m, isn't he? Bony's been a handful for teams in our league and in Europe for Swansea. He's a goalscorer but also a physical presence.
Getting back to my original point above, Pellegrini likes the option for two strikers, Bony and Aguero are two very different but very good strikers, they could play individually or together. I trust the club, our guys ain't no mugs. If we get him then its because he is thought to be in that bracket of players how are, or can soon be, the very best for what this club needs.
As for FFP concerns, Platini will be watching closely. But with £12m Nastasic and £3m for Sinclair and Guidetti each on the cards, and I am sure I remember a figure of £18-20m being mentioned as our limit carried over from summer, looks to me like this is a move which will make us very much stronger for the second half of the season and is fully justifiable to UEFA. But knowing City nowadays anyway, I can imagine this will be something like £20m now and the rest to follow.
