Will AI wipe out humanity?

If you thought the last few months of AI tech was getting stale... Apple have gone for a slightly different dystopian angle. More of a Minority Report vibe.

Coming to the US by the end of the year for the small price of $3,499.

Of course, given that seems to include a home theater, 3D video camera, and entire desktop in one device I think some will see that as a worthwhile investment.

I am being a bit facetious but the pace of tech developments is equal parts fascinating and frightening. Metaverses, VR, AI, and now AR. It doesn't feel like a stretch to say the world in just 5 years could look drastically different. And who knows whether it will be for the better.

I remember back in about 2011 religiously trying to keep up with developments of Google Glass, which was a doomed project and was ultimately discontinued earlier this year. I couldn't have imagined anything close to this.

It looks like an incredible piece of tech, way ahead of its time even. God I hope it doesn't take off.

Genuinely wouldn't want one for free.

Imagine in 6 months people walking down the street with one of those strapped to their head..

Very much a beta product but does seem like a big step up from the current crop of VR headsets on the market. It'll only ever serve a very niche audience in the short/medium term but the movie function alone looks absolutely incredible.

A ton of cash but in a few years the cost will trickle down of course.

Remember the 'too expensive, it'll never catch on' jibe was also thrown at the Apple Watch and iPad, and they are now ubiquitous.

Apple don't tend to be first to market in a product category, but they do tend to get it right when they do. First Apple Watch aside - which was also a beta product and really shouldn't have been shipped, it wasn't ready (Jony Ive said so himself).

This is unrelated to the topic at hand but fuck me, Tim Cook sounds just like Mr. Garrison from South Park.

Can't be arsed with that any time soon.............

Interesting coincidental segment on Newsnight about the risks of it, with Rishi meeting Buden this week to discuss the threat of AI to humanity, apparently.
