Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

I honestly thought it was staged until Smith did his speech when he won his award.

He knew he fucked up. The media would be talking about his deserved victory. Instead it's all about the slap.

His speech showed humility and nipped it in the bud.

For the record ABC did not show it. The show was being produced by Disney. That shows how insidious that company is being, but that's another arguement.Sky and other broadcasters did.
There’s nothing “insidious” about a 7-10 second tape delay, especially on American TV, where there is no threshold that allows almost anything to be said or done on TV.

Some people see something in everything!

For the record, Rock and Smith & Pinkett have previous.

Pinkett has been open, and expressed her vulnerability, about her condition.

I couldn’t care less about any of them, but the ridiculous (and particularly crude) discussion about the Smith-Pinkett relationship are well off the mark, too. In fact, they’ve openly talked about it on TV.

Divorced philandering comedian, who has made fun of the couple for sport in the past, makes fun of a man’s wife’s hair loss condition (about which she has openly expressed her personal concerns and fears) for laughs in front of a global TV audience.

In the moment, Smith tried to make light of it, but his wife was clearly not amused. Something must have happened between the two of them in the immediate aftermath of Rock’s comments and Smith acted.

He didn’t go up and punch or pummel him, but slapped him and walked away.

Rock continued to talk about it and Smith reacted verbally from his front row seat.

Rock has refused to file a police report, Smith apologized to the audience and event, but not Rock, and life goes on.

Do I condone the violence? No.
Do some people feel they shouldn’t have to take the cheap slings and arrows, done live in front of cameras as some kind of shield? Yes.
Could it all have been handled better by both? Yes.
Does it highlight a negative stereotype of the black male in American culture? Possibly.

I was more shocked by the black female comedian/host who patted down two males on live TV after a sexual innuendo filled skit before the two celebrity awardees even came out!

Turn THAT situation around and it would be wall to wall #MeToo, and that guy’s career would be over!

The guys all laughed it off, probably because they didn’t feel violated or vulnerable or powerless. However, while the initial joke might have been amusing, the message was lost when she started aggressively frisking them, IMHO.

Will Smith’s career will carry on, as will Rock’s. They will both make more money in the future than anyone (I suspect) here will ever make in their lifetime, and live very comfortable lives despite the furor.

Sun came up in the east this morning…

Demi Moore shaved her head for G.I. Jane, Rock said she was appearing in the sequel.
That's it, tame as fuck.
Lady loses her legs to diabetes.
Comes to Oscar’s.
Comedian makes fun of her loss of legs by saying, “Some people will do anything to try to get the Lieutenant Dan gig in Forrest Gump 2…but she must have forgotten he was a guy!”

Laugh?
Feel it’s in bad taste?
Shrug it off?

Comedy, and whether something is funny or not, is personal and catches us all differently.

Sometimes, it’s a gasp and a laugh but sometimes it’s a gasp and a groan.

The razor’s edge is sharp!

I had wondered if there was previous between Rock and Smith.

And I agree the patdown thing was mildly amusing when suggestive, but then went on and on. It was just a weird choice early in the show, although I assume the two presenters (Momoa and Brolin) were aware of the skit. There's no way she'd have done that to Chalomet, one of the original 4 named.

Imagine somebody who'd had a leg amputated for, say, diabetes or as a result of a car accident.
And then Chris Rock could have said "Don't worry, if you get a parrot I hear they're doing a remake of Treasure Island"
Doubt if people would have seen the funny side of that

This would never have even been dreamed of 20 years ago. Kind of says it all about the current generation and the culture it is creating...

Violence is fine people. But words? NOOOOOnoooooNOOOOOO!!!

Have always enjoyed will smith and his work, but still think they should strip him of the award and ban him from all future events. But this is an age of actions without consequence it would seem. Teenagers watching this learning glorious life lessons.

Dont victim blame girlbob

I personally wouldn't slap anyone, but if I was taking the piss out of someone's wife in the pub then I'd be conscious at least that it's something that might happen. Chat shit get banged innit.

I have something to tell you about the history of Hollywood or entertainment if you think an altercation between two actors is something that would only happen today.

To be quite honest, we are so sensitive to violence these days, which is a good thing, that even a mild altercation can generate weeks of coverage. Nowt to do with "this generation" whatever that means given these are middle-aged men.
