Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

I don't want to say this is a stupid take, so I'll say this; White people tell Black jokes. Black people tell White jokes.

The telling of the joke is not the issue, it's how it's done. Bill Burr is a master at telling racial jokes because of how the joke is framed.

Chris Rock's joke was about a 'character' who was a tough somabitch, who shaved her hair to dislodge her femininity and lead a team of hardened soldiers. That's who the character was.

His joke wasn't about alopecia as a slant seeming as he made a docu about Black hair and addressed alopecia in it.

If someone wants to take offence and absorb a perceived slight, they will. But more reflective listeners/ watchers will absorb the greater angle.

By the way, he told Jada Smith he 'loved her' before the assault, so it wasn't mean as a direct insult.

Smith does not want to be in that marriage.

It's toxic, clearly.
Methinks there’s a little analysis paralysis going on here.

He made a crack about her almost shaved head, in reference to GI Jane, but it’s the height of obfuscation to suggest it had anything to do with the “strength of the character” in the movie!

He cracked a joke, Will laughed, Jada didn’t. Will got up and slapped Rock. Smith overstepped and stumbled into illegality. Rock was the bigger man and shrugged it off, even after the verbals that continued from the expensive seats.

Smith went on to win the Best Actor Award when he should not have been in the building by any normal security measure…but he’s Will Smith, this is the Oscar’s and his category hadn’t been announced yet!!!

Hollywood gave itself yet another black eye (no racist pun intended) last night…and that wasn’t the only incident!

The black female comedian picking single men out to come back stage with her was one step over the equality line, but then physically, and rather over enthusiastically, patting down Josh Brolin and Jason Mamoa was waaaay over the line!

Turn the sexes around and it’s bad enough. Turn it around, but make the races the same (black male host patting down white female leading ladies) and you have a whole other ballgame!

Hollywood hypocrisy usually knows no bounds, but Oscar 2022 has set a new bar! Entitlement, wealth, name and stature, and even race were all on show…and that show was a disaster!

I honestly couldn’t give two shits about 99% of all of that BUT if Hollywood is going constantly be “oh so righteous” about race, gender, #MeToo, and every other perceived slight in life, then it needs to take a long hard look at itself when rewatching the show. It won’t be a pretty self portrait!!!

Jim Carrey summed it up for many people…

From Jada Pinkett-Smith last week:

“I don't give two craps what people think of this bald head of mine. Because guess what? I love it.”

Hmmm, I guess she DOES care if ”people” dare to make an obvious movie reference joke about it…even if they do say “Jada. I love you!” beforehand!

I wouldn't take anything she says at face value. Absolute narcissist and blagger.

Not sure if anyone posted this already they probably have but got sent this on WhatsApp earlier this morning... Couldn't post the video on here it was too large, I thought was stupidly daft and a bit of a laugh poking fun at the situation, I'm not really interested in searching this thread anymore and not to check if it's been posted, just looked it up and found it on YouTube a proper shite channel name but maybe peeps will think it's funny maybe they won't here goes.

Wait until South Park gets hold of it.

Wait until South Park gets hold of it.

Sure he and a fictional version of his family has previously appeared years ago but can't remember a thing.

Parker/Stone were probably already planning on spoofing him due to his wife treating him like a doormat before all of this happened, they'll more than likely turn him into a mild mannered type baking cookies for visitors, usually the male town folk when they visit Jada in their bedroom and others places right near him while he does chores, they'll make Will very oblivious to it all happening despite being told by the kids that they saw something suspicious... I can see Will Smith acting very effeminate in an almost camp and stay at home mum type way, a very girlie man trying to be romantic while she's bloke-ish burping scratching drinking beer slapping his backside etc. but generally treating him badly before Will comes to the realisation she's cheating, tears flow for a bit but he decides he is a strong alpha male and plans to put his foot down in a very manly way.

He'll then attacks an innocent Big Gay Al with a similarly soft slap in a jealous rage for simply talking to Jada, as it turns out Jada was working on a surprise play with Al while secretly sleeping around, Will then reflects on guilt being a monster for his extreme violence shown toward Al, he seeks help for that and being paranoid of his wife's extramarital affairs also... While Jada actually carries on her affairs the episode ends with her and Chris Rock in bed caressing her shiny shaved head, before the credits roll Rock implies women with shaved heads turn him on so much and how it reminds him of GI Jane.

Can't be arsed anymore. I was interested yesterday. Respect to your pov though.

My opinion for what it is worth on jokes is that nothing should be off limits, the public will decide what they find acceptable and what isn't. Times move on some people will change their opinions over that time.

Just look at Jim Davidson, Chubby Brown and Bernard Manning, they wouldn't survive today as people have changed their view on what is acceptable.

The people who truly piss me off are the ones who go to a jimmy Carr show and complain about one joke.
They are quite happy to laugh at the other 99% but the one joke offends them and they complain. totally ignoring that one of the jokes they found acceptable was offensive to someone else.

I don't blame Will Smith for being pissed off with Rock, but the way he dealt with it was 100% wrong.

He came out of it looking a right **** in my eyes.

Apologies if already posted but i thought this article by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a good read. While I was there I had a read of a couple of his other pieces, nothing profound but well written and argued I thought.

That was perfect from start to finish. He's a great man and he has a talent for sharing his thoughts and information without being patronising.

I first found out about Kareem Abdul Jabbar during the George Floud reaction when one of his essays/articles went viral and I’ve read everything he’s put out since.

I can’t remember the last time he wrote something and the general reaction wasn’t “yep, he’s nailed that”. I suppose partially it’s because he sticks to what he knows very well, but he’s also an excellent writer and his arguments are so considered it makes it hard for people who disagree to not find it at least a respectable argument.

Absolutely, I knew that after his basketball career he'd stayed in the public sphere but only had the vaguest notion of what he was doing. Wish I had come across his writing sooner, but will seek it out in future.

Wonderfully articulated by the big man.

Came here to post a similarly themed article by a behavioral / organizational psychologist I follow - Adam Grant (https://adamgrant.bulletin.com/a-slap-in-the-face).
