Mike Keegan saying this is very much a US led proposal and that he’s led to believe that City and Chelsea were backed into a corner on Friday

Strange to be backed in a corner. If the terrible 3 fucked off the league and UCL to play Italian clubs 5 times a year why the fuck didn’t we just let them get on with it?!?!

this won’t happen, is my guess

It can't can it. Miscalculation by those involved.

Everything you have written is spot on - speaking as a fan.
But from a Club owners perspective yes football is a business and these owners clearly want to have a guarentee in protecting their investment to the detriment of the game as a whole. Not that they give a shit.
Totally agree @Mad Eyed Screamer . Sport is exciting because you can win, lose or draw. In some ways the clubs feel like gamblers who like the excitement of winning only and have no interest in ever losing!

However, if they are businessmen who want to protect their investment (I agree they are), then it's a bizarre that they are doing something that is plainly unpopular with their customers (fans). I can't think of many businesses that succeed by alienating their core custom.

I don't think it's even clear that there's a global demand for this competition either. Will it be exciting watching us play Juventus twice a season, every season? The reason it's exciting to play Juventus is that it should be a rarity, not a given. Jeez... we could end up getting excited that we end up playing Watford and Middlesborough at this rate! :)
