William Carvalho

I am not buying all this pace argument.

As long as he has great positioning, is excellent in tight spaces and can ping a ball to switch play to the wings, isn't that the player we want?

Toni Kroos isn't quick but understands the game inside out.

Pace is so overstated in the PL.

I think the issue, and again it's based on a 10 second video by many on here, is he looks heavy footed and a bit lazy.

We know all about this with Yaya.

For the record I like the small amount I've seen from Carvalho.

Danilo is a destroyer, he can just about play football but he's not the sort of player I can recall any Pep team having. As for the lack of effort thing, that seems to be an insult mainly thrown at black players if they don't live up to peoples expectations that they should just be physical players constantly charging around like Kante. I don't think Carvalho shows any less effort than players like Busquets, Alonso or Carrick

It's not an insult thrown around at black players at all, simply those whose effort seems lackluster regardless of race. I suspect our views on the two respective players are different. We can agree to disagree, that is fine, but don't attempt to besmirch my name with cheap inference; its childish.

I just think if you are intelligent and an overall very good footballer, pace is irrelevant.

One of the reasons I think Fernando failed at City is because his overall technical ability is poor and I am unconvinced he is intelligent enough to play at the very highest level as a single pivot.

As I said earlier, if there is anyone in world football who understands this pivot position - or midfielders in general - it's Pep.

I wasn't "besmirching your name", it was a general point about the expectations of certain players based on their nationality or race. Black players are expected to be more physical and people do overlook their technical ability, that's just a fact. It took until our title winning season for anyone in the British media to even acknowledge that Yaya Toure might actually be technically good at football and even still he's not talked about in the same way as Xavi and Pirlo. Carvalho isn't the player people think he should be, he gets compared to the wrong players and judged on the wrong aspects of his game

I agree Carvalho is a great passer of the ball, as I said in my first post on this thread; I also acknowledge he is intelligent with positioning and often makes interceptions. However, I am surprised that the ability to press, harry and return to a defensive position with haste could be considered the wrong aspects of any defensive midfielders game- that still has very little to do with being black and everything to do with a position played by a player on the football pitch.

Again, I don't think he presses or harries like a Kante or a Danilo, but he's just as capable (if not more so) as Busquets or Alonso

I've liked the look of him every time I have seen him play, but there is this niggling doubt.

He's constantly linked with big moves. Year in, year out.

And yet nobody has taken the plunge. Why?

If this guys is on par with Yaya as far as passing ability and ball retention I'd take him. The thing is that you can try to put more of a defensive midfielder in the pivot, but they will likely turn the ball over more putting immediate pressure on our back line. We played with Dihno in the pivot early in the season and he gave the ball away numerous times. Currently we only have Yaya if he signs for another year who can play the pivot. Maybe Garcia, but he needs more experience. We need someone else because Yaya won't be able to play twice a week all season long.

Is that Felipe Caicedo?

I hope his youtube clips misrepresent him - or he's got massive well-hidden potential ...cos he looks pretty slow an laborious to me.

(P.S. I had high hopes for Caicedo)
