Wine

Anyone else just grab whatever takes their fancy at the time? Either that or whatever is on offer. Just don't go too cheap and that seems to work well.

I quite like having the 'surprise' of what it's going to taste like.
 
I recently settled, for myself, the question of whether an expensive wine was worth the money. My son, who had been wondering the same, bought a bottle of red £750 which we drank alongside a £15 bottle bought from Laithwaites.

Without doubt, you could tell, without knowing, which was the more expensive bottle. However, taste wise it was not for me. The blurb described it as having "notes of tobacco and leather". So, it seemed to me, to be an acquired taste and not one which I really want to acquire.

I'm a big fan of Primitivo but any black red tends to appeal.

I got into Puglian wines on holiday and continued the trend back home.
Susumaniello is a rediscovered grape that is gaining favour on a bigger scale now. Big bold reds that are really easy drinking . The Masca del Tacco is a budget friendly choice which you will hopefully love .
The Primitivos can be rose or red and are really good value.
Negro amaro is another popular choice .

Me too mate. There was a time I bought Laithwaites as well as the WS but binned them off as the WS is far superior.

I really don't have a favourite wine - it depends on the occasion and how I feel. We have recently been buying one of the WS Greek whites which are delicious and good value at just under a tenner a bottle.

Never tried Wine Society, been using Naked Wines,happy with them but may give WS a go too.

That's the thing, wine is so subjective, £750 wine to some is no better than a £15 bottle.
My son in law is high up at his company and the likes of google wine & dine them regulary and think of nothing at purchasing a £500 bottle of wine, and invariably are no better than a Laithwaites £15 bottle...

Think there is a noticeable differenece up to about £30 retail for me. Not that experienced trying much more expensive than that myself to say. That said my son has tasted a few more expensive wines and says he would pay more for some but would need to have tried it first as many aren't worth it he got to try 70 year old £400 wine recently and said it was good but no better than most £20-30 wines.

Tom Gilbey is very good...his Youtube channel is worth a watch. He has videos covering the best (and worst) supermarket wines ... he is also a big advocate of buying supermarkets own label lines..'Specially Selected' from Aldi, 'Blueprint' from Waitrose etc etc
 
Spent a week last year in Tuscany for my brother-in-law’s 60th, he’s got a few quid and had hired a huge mansion for a load of us to go over. Now he’s a proper wine buff, irritating in some ways, but hat off he knows his shit. I’d never heard of a Brunello until then, which is from the region of Tuscany we were at. He’d bought fucking loads of the stuff and had it brought into the house. I’ve never drank as much red wine in that week in my life, it was never ending.

Have to say, if anyone fancies a splurge and you’re a fan of a Barolo, then it’s worth giving it a whirl. Cheapest you can get it over here appears to be around £30 a bottle but it’s certainly not one you see readily around.
 
White - Waitrose blue print range Gruner Veltliner from Austria
Red - Majestic Incanta Pinot Noir from Romania
Special occasions Margaux or Pauillac
 
We all like what we like and we all have different tastes, but got to say the one wine I don't get is Pinot Noir, as a red for me it has no guts as a drinking wine, and for pairing though it's okay chilled and used as an altenative to white there are lots of whites I'd choose over it. Obviously many like it but I don't get it.
