Words and phrases you don't hear any more.

I can remember when the terraces (as opposed to the stands) were always referred to as the "popular side". Never heard that for years. There was also the "paddock", a standing area below the main stand seats.
"Midfield general" was also used for someone like Merlin (only not as good)
Anybody else go back that far? Dave Ewing? Oakie?
Midfield general was common currency in the fifties 'n sixties. Peter Dobing was a midfield general - more of a lance corporal I always thought, but inside right and inside left are words ne'er used anymore! All this bullshine about false fuckin' nines! WTF is a false nine. Had I said to an O-Level examiner that my answer to Q2 is a false nine I doubt he would have given the answer a tick!
