Work/Life Balance

@FantasyIreland loads have left the fire service to become train drivers, more money better hours, if I wasn’t so close to finishing I’d have gone for it as well. Public sector have huge problems in retention now and lots of specialised jobs are not easy to replace it takes months/years to get people into these positions for shit pay and conditions and treatment. Tip of the iceberg.
I work alongside a few,you probably know a couple.. ..there were some I met in the recruitment process too.So many public workers are coming over, it's scary the amount of experience our communities are losing

I have been a train guard for the past 3 years. As of tomorrow i start as a train driver.

I was in the Ambulance service 13 years, the railway offered me,and half a dozen of my colleagues from the same station,an escape from that.

Being a paramedic is a very stressful and often thankless occupation,it tests every part of your make up and your emotions and, while there are good times, they are infrequent as almost everyday you leave work in a frustrated, angry or even a depressive state - i was at breaking point both mentally and physically.

So...while i wouldn't say don't become a Paramedic, please make sure your daughter is fully aware of the impact it will have on every aspect of her life.
3 years as a train guard...try 18.

Can’t hack it so fuck off for the easy money on the pointy end. :)

To be fair you have to have a special mentality to go on the front. It’s never appealed to me. I’ve always been a people person and love coming to work every day interacting with the railway traveling public. As for train driving, I’d want to want to do it for the enjoyment, not the money. Good luck with the new role.

The money is a bonus Mat,nothing more,it certainly wasn't my motivation.Obviously long term job security is a concern but mainly i've done it because i like to prove myself in life and this seems another fantastic challenge.I too have always been customer/public facing,so not having that constant interaction will be different.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Good luck with the new challenge. I’ll know you’ve made it when you post about wanting to drive freight as it’s more manageable than the passengers and the cunts on the back.
