World Cup 2026

The new World Cup balls (if this is really them) are monstrosities!

From the premier league the chosen referees are Taylor and Oliver. Gillett being a var representative.

England warm up games in Tampa and Orlando.

Another reason not to go.

Just seen that.

Return train from central New York(Penn Station)to MetLife Stadium normally costs £9.50. For The World Cup it'll cost £73.80, also no concessions.

It's absolutely fucking ridiculous and I believe FIFA are definitely taking a cut of that

I understand the mayors argument about FiFA getting everything for free whilst states are expected to use taxpayers money to cover their losses.

However shit like this won't encourage people to stay and pay their money into the local economies.
Yep, that's why all of the countries that aren't horrendous dictatorships have started to not bother bidding. I think the Netherlands were going to bid a while back and then FIFA said that they had to agree to no taxes, so they told them to fuck off.

And FIFA created a rod for their own back by allowing Qatar to change the terms of the deal after it had already been agreed. They bid for a summer World Cup then changed it to winter. They agreed to allow alcohol and then banned it. So now every future bidder can just agree to all of FIFA's demands and then go back on them when it's too late to change anything. The US agreed to provide transport 'at cost' to spectators, and it now looks like they're calling FIFA's bluff on that too.

The next demand will be the US win it.

Totally absurd by the local NJ authorities. How to destroy your visitor economy in one go. I don't understand. I thought the fans poured millions of dollars into local bars, restaurants, and hotels and the broadcast exposure was priceless. Tony Soprano would be turning in his grave at this wasted opportunity.

Just heard The Athletic FC podcast from 2 days ago entitled “Why Is The 2026 World Such A Rip Off?”

Sounds absolutely outrageous what is going on, in so many regards. I don’t like much of their output, but I’d recommend that episode, a real eye-opener on the context, the reality come the summer, and some of the reasons behind it - though not all, as you’ll still be baffled by some of the decisions even after listening to it!

It does have the feel of one of those hyped up global events that ultimately has largely empty stands. I wonder if America and Infantino are ready for such a potential embarrassment?

I'm morally torn between looking forward to it, and just forgetting it's happening. I want to see how Khusanov does in his first world cup, how the minnows get on, be proven wrong about England struggling to get out of the group, see the best players in the world make iconic moments, but I have huge issues getting behind this politically.

Why are we surprised? Give the world cup to the most capitalist country in the world and are surprised when they try to squeeze every bit if money out of it. Just waiting for them to try to change the game into quarters so they can have more ad breaks......sorry, forgot about water breaks l, guess that's already happened too.
