This must have be an age thing, because City had players like Nick Fenton and Gary Mason who weren't even good enough when City were struggling at the start of the 98-99 campaign.
I remember going travelling in 98 and not returning until September and my mates telling me how great this lad Gary Mason was. Fair to say he was not the saviour I expected when I saw him live in a 0-0 or 1-1 draw with Colchester.
As for Fenton I sort of felt he was a victim of the time. Played well at home against Burnley (possibly his debut) but dropped a clanger at the death to gift them an equaliser. We could not buy a break around that time.
