worst place you’ve stayed in

Believe it or not, the worst place I stayed in was a 4* hotel in Central London. It was the Grosvenor above Victoria Station. It was August, sweltering and there was no air conditioning so you had to have the window open. All you could hear were the announcements “Platform 12 for the 8.12 to Brighton calling at....”

The shower in the room didn’t work and despite me telling them 3 times they did fuck all until I stood in reception complaining in a very loud voice after which I got another room. Two of us went for dinner in the restaurant and the waiter made Manuel from Fawlty Towers look professional and fluent in English. Joe, the lad I was with, said he wanted the carvery and Manuel brought him a pot of coffee instead.

I once spent 15 nights in an 8-man room with 3 useable bed frames, 5 mattresses, one pair of curtains between 4 windows and a threadbare carpet with a huge burn hole in it. Luckily I was on the middle floor of 3, as the ground floor was infested with critters, and the top floor had a leaky roof. The worst thing was there was only one available bathroom with 4 showers (intermittent temperature, low pressure), and 4 toilets for 3 floors of 60 people. If anyone remembers the toilet in The Young Ones, you're probably not far off.
What's Domestos?

Crafty/arty chums of mine were selling stuff in some hipster fair in Edinburgh the week before the comedy festival.

Me and the ex ex Mrs This! took their room for the weekend. Big shared kind of hostel HMO thing. B+B. The headboard was a lovely purple velour with some things jumping around amongst the 1970's brylcreem stains. Real beasts. The place was crawling. The "en-suite" was a tiny shower cubicle just standing in the corner of the room, plastic corner curtain and all! There was a loo somewhere down a groaning corridor that was too awful to contemplate...say no more.

"Breakfast" - well, this deserves a separate thread...
