Religion brings comfort to a significant proportion of the world's population, it is essential to many people. But too often it is hijacked by people with sinister agendas, see the dictatorship in Iran, Islamic extremism etc etc.

And it is responsible for countless conflicts, see Gaza/Jerusalem. Even genocide, see the Bosnian war.

Few would argue that the world would be a safer place without religion, there'd be no guarantees, but I'd wager that populations with bitter differences would find it an easier task to peacefully coexist.
