Plastic cards tend to end up in land fill after one year whereas most phones after many years of use are recycled
I rarely fly just making the point about boarding cards

no justifiably reason why a plastic season card needs to end up in landfill each year, its a simple task to reload data for the following season onto the season card, I still have the season card from 2003/04, its still in pristine condition.
