Not so sure - after a trophyless season, I think it's pretty safe to assume that Real Madrid will be going flat-out.
Perhaps the bigger challenges will be from the teams just below that level ? The ones like Juventus, Porto etc where the prize money on offer might justify them sacrificing next season in order to reach the final or SF. I don’t think that applies to RM, Bayern or City.

There just won’t be enough prestige in winning the competition for RM’s players to get worked up.

Maybe - but anything with 'World' in the title and RM probably think that they have a divine right to win it, the precious gits that they are.

After all, they crow about the number of UCL titles - forgetting that nobody else took it seriously for the first 5 years.

I think motivation levels across the European sides will be largely similar.

One thing I was thinking about, but haven't spent much time researching is what stage other clubs are at. The South American clubs will all be in peak fitness with their seasons well underway. They might shock a few of the European teams who will have a number of players cooked from last season still.

I think that's wrong. This competition is more important than some fans seem to realise. It's very far from glorified friendlies. Watch the best teams in the world fight tooth and nail to win it.

Even if you write off the first 5 years they haven't done too badly ha.
Biggest club in the world by a country mile for a reason

Yeah, and I guess that c. 1960 team were rubbish apart from the likes of Puskas, Di Stefano, Gento and Del Sol.

I don't think anybody said they were rubbish, did they?

Just that, historically clubs and fans will happily take pride in any tournament victories, however Mickey Mouse they might have been considered at the time.

Real Madrid will go eyeballs-out for this

Their president is up for it, Barca not there.

I really don't think we're going to switch to a back 5 system.

Take one of the centre-backs out for a midfielder (Nico, Bernardo, Foden, Gündo, even Bobb or Lewis) and then I can see it.

Also not convinced Rodri is going to start, Pep will probably ease him back in.
3 CBS with ait nouri giving width further up on the left.
