X5 Solar Flare tonight...

Cloudy for me here at the moment but will head north into the Peak District, if not further, if it gets and stays clear.

On a side note, the impact was not as strong as anticipated so it may end up being underwhelming...

Since then the magnetic cloud following the shock, as measured by the ACE spacecraft, has been configured in such a way that restricts the transfer of energy from the ICME into the Earth's magnetic field. As such, the geomagnetic activity level following the SSC has so far been relatively weak.

typically it peeked at 6.45 this morning with red alerts on aurora watch UK, meaning visible in all areas of the UK. It must have hit level 7 or 8 kp

Edit: A 7 it is... <a class="postlink" href="http://solarham.com/planetk.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://solarham.com/planetk.htm</a>

Favourable conditions for tonight. Currently at Kp 7.67. Should be clearer later as well.

Fingers crossed.
