Xabi Alonso

Returning back on topic.

I'm not sure whether he would fit in at Barcelona because Busquets serves the same purpose within that team and I don't consider Alonso to be vastly superior personally.

They have Mascherano as well, who is very similar to Xabi quality-wise.

If Madrid are stupid enough to sell him, we should make a move. We need a deep-lying playmaker and having Pizarro added a different dimension last season.
As pace isn't his main strength, he could be around for 4 or more years. I just hope they're not making a bid for Silva...

Red Dippers are going to bring down twitter if they don't 'calm down' over the news from Spain that Alonso is on his way out of Madrid! They seem to think he is nailed on to go back to Klanfield! Anyone think we might be in for him? Could be the 'hunter being hunted' that Tolm was on a bout a few week ago?

Hes joined Barcelona if you read this thread, I'm sure that you can't play for 3 teams in one season.

Agree. If there is the slightest chance that he might be available, we should slap in a bid.

If they ask about Silva, just quote them €100m.

where would he play/replace ?

the transfer forum is ridiculous ;) everyone needs to stop playing fifa

Dont understand the suggestion we need him tbh, im almost certain Rodwell was the end of out dealings in the midfield dept. Even if one of the current crop left we are still fine.

Could you imagine him in a midfield with Messi,Iniesta, xahi and Fabregas !! oh hang on !!

Why would he come to us surounded with talent like that??? not to mention the location weather etc !!
Sorry but ^^^^^^that is Bobbins

Right so it's okay for Barcelona to have Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Busquets, Thiago, Mascherano. And Real Madrid to have: Modric (soon), Khedira, Sahin, Granero, Diarra (Pepe has also played defensive midfield for them)

All central midfield options, but it's not OK for us to add Alonso to Yaya, Barry, Rodwell, Milner, Razak, and the outgoing (this summer or next) De Jong?

Look at the difference in quality besides Yaya. We want to be a top club, if the clubs we aspire to compete against can have depth in quality like that, so can we.

Alonso would be a fantastic addition who would give us a feature we don't have. He is nearly two years younger then Xavi and neither looks even close to finished so could offer us 5 years or so of service especially as top players in this position last forever (Pirlo and Scholes two others). I hope the club have been alerted by this, his age plus contract situation could mean he can be signed for under £15million.

The club is obviously wary of FFP. So having 3/4 players on the bench each week in the same position earning decent wages wouldn't reallly appeal I'd imagine.

And no way he would cost less than £15 million regardless of how long is left on his current deal.

Considering Milner is used more as a right winger (or right wing-back in this 3-5-2) by Mancini, he is more of right-sided option than as a central midfielder. How many times has Mancini ever played Milner in the middle? Three or four?

As for Rodwell, in Mancini's own words he has to improve to be a regular so he is not going to improve our midfield here and now. He is a long-term investment and I'd say there is also a possibility he could revert to centre-back in the long run as a long-term partner for Kompany (whether we sign Agger or not could give us a clue about this).

De Jong will be leaving, if he was going to sign a new contract it would have happened by now. If not this summer then next summer and Rodwell's signing is probably in preparation for that.

We'll struggle to go far in the Champions League without a better partner for Yaya in midfield, Barry would be hopelessly exposed if we came up against Barcelona or Real Madrid as good as he is for us in the league. Barry was very poor against Bayern (away) and Napoli (home) and dropped for the Napoli away game, all the while playing well in the league for us. Strikes me as the opposite of Veron, who was atrocious for United in the league and very good for them in Europe.

Right now I think our genuine central midfielders are Yaya, De Jong, Barry, Rodwell, and Razak. Not one of them offers a wide passing range from deep, which Alonso would bring and which would also be another route to unlocking defences. I don't know if City will have any interest in Alonso but personally think he'd be a great signing for us, the heartbeat of the midfield of the team that just undid Barcelona. The opportunity to sign a player of this quality doesn't come along very often.

If theres any chance of him at city id love him always rated him 15-20 million would be a great buy how old is he now though?

I know someone who uses a capital letter at the start of Every Single Word He Types. What a massive ball ache that must be.

A pain in the arse but at least it is consistent.

If like you say, he has another 5 years in him, then why would we sign him and Rodwell; who would get next to no game time.

Well if the news of Alonso refusing to sign a contract is true, it only broke today. Rodwell would get game time too even if we signed Alonso, assuming NDJ leaves this summer instead of walking for nothing next (Sneijder's public tapping up of him makes me think there may be legitimacy to the Inter rumours). 4 specialised central midfielders (+1 in Razak if he doesn't go on loan) for 2 positions would mean plenty of games for all unless we draw United in the FA and Carling Cup 3rd rounds and lose both games. And we may not be so lucky with injuries this year... and there is the small matter of Yaya in Africa for a month.
