I used to live up the road from Middleton CC who were in the CLL - often spent a Sunday there. I know that Basil D'Olivera got his break in England at Middleton and I seem to recall the likes of Wasim Akram and Patrick Patterson among others plying their trade in that league?
I remember one sleepy Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon in about 1988 that I had off and was walking down Towncroft Ave to have a pint in the Crown. As I passed the gate I saw there was a game on so went in bought a pint at the bar and sat down to watch. I asked someone who was playing and he recoiled in horror and said in a thick Ulster accent " you don't know??? " Long and short of it a GMP team were playing an RUC team and it was all hush hush coz of the troubles and they were horrified I just walked in off the street. The main gate was guarded but somehow the Towncroft gate was not locked and unguarded. Even though I was a member and identified as such I was asked to drink up and leave !!!
