Yaya Toure - 2016/17 performances

Just keeps us ticking, it's noticeable how much our players try to get him on the ball. He controls the pace of the game from that deep central midfield spot, reminds me of what Pirlo did at Juventus in his later years. Him being much fitter also means he can do a job defensively, great again today.

When we get a penalty, they may as well just restart the game n give us the goal, I've never felt so confident as when I see that guy step up for a penalty compared to any other player ever, never in doubt.

Its great to see and am happy to call out that I thought he was finished at City. Glad to be wrong. I thought he was brilliant in that position, he must have had more touches and passes than anyone else by a long way and settles our defence by being a safe and confident outlet for them every moment he is on the pitch. Never thought I would see him sprint back to make sliding tackles -he did twice. He settled the match with his penalty. Also really liked the love between him and Pep when he was substituted. Pep has played a managerial blinder in getting Yaya to this point but also it shows that Yaya has got more to him than is normally portrayed on here. Early days and it all might be to get a better move in the summer but think he still has a major contribution to make this season.

Stubborn bastard who was beaten into submission by Pep telling him to "STFU and apologize, lose some weight, and get your act together!" Fair play to him, because he has done all three and is now playing the best he has played in three years. Still lost a step, but got a head for football that few in the game possess. Hope he can continue through the rest of the season this way, because with injuries and wanting to dictate the pace and possession of every game we play, we need him. Nice to see him and Pep having a smile and a laugh when he brought him off, too.

Was my MOTM at WHU yesterday, even though I understand others choosing Sterling Silva. His reading of the game, finding the hole, dictating the play and finding his man are absolute WORLD CLASS, and I think he is the best in the League at what he does. That said, he is now the delivery man for Sterling Silva De Bruyne, which is not bad considering their own personal and collective talents. Throw Aguero up on the top, and when those five players are on, we really are unstoppable and irresistible.

Nice post. This theory will be significantly tested against Spuds who to my mind have the most in form midfield in the PL just now. Will be fascinating to watch. Dembele,Dyer,Wanyama, Eriksen and Dele Alli are impressive this season. If we beat them in midfield we will really be starting to motor.

Balotelli?

Absolutely!

What Pocc has done so well there is create a midfield with size, strength, solidity AND creativity. That is the key to success in the English game. Their problem (for me) has always been where the goals will come from if Alli or Kane is having an off day? Other than an Ericksen free kick here and there...? Also, if you can stop their marauding FBs, you stop the bulk of the service to them both.

Find me a big lad, like Dier, Wanyama or Dembele, with half the skill and nous of a Silva or Toure and I'll show you the best midfielder in the world. THAT is almost what Fernandinho is (for me), and what we are crying out for in midfield. Yes, I get the likes of Gundogan, Silva, Delph, and all the other "little fellas" who ferret away in the middle, but show me a big lad who can tackle AND get his head up, with some touch and 10 goals in him and I will give you £50M for him all day, every day. Not to belabor the point, but Gerrard and Lampard were the best English versions of that we have seen in a generation. Dier, and, to a lesser extent now it seems, Barkley were the next big thing in that regard, but are pale imitations. Henderson is doing his best impression and Barton always aspired and fell well short. I don't need him to be English, British or Anything-ish, just a Blue!

Find THAT player and you build a team around him. That is what Yaya WAS, and there is no replacement at City YET. Whether he is growing in the Academy or he currently plying his trade in some other League somewhere, I'm not sure, but that piece of the jigsaw puzzle is the hardest one to fill, because THAT GUY is the preeminent FOOTBALLER in the world and EVERYONE wants him! The trick is finding him BEFORE everyone else has sussed him out, because it takes stupid money to not only buy him, but pay him, once everyone knows what he is!

Fernandinho isn't like that for me because whilst he is efficient at what he does, his goal threat and creativity are virtually zero.

If we can find another Yaya Toure but 7 years younger then we have hit the jackpot.

That lad was supposed to be Pogba. History will tell if he will ever fulfill his potential, or remain a fooking costly flop.
