Yaya Toure and Ramadan ...

the thing is it WONT affect there performances, muslims have been doing this since they were kids, and they get a big good meal in the morning then again at night , so no worries. btw i just came on here to tell you this.

I can' speak for footballers, but I can say that the labourer we had on our jobsite a couple of years ago was an absolute useless pile of crap during Ramadan.

Don't forget Edin.

Get the lowdown on the Bosnia striker with our Mirror.co.uk profile, with more goals than you could shake a stick at.

1) Edin Dzeko was born in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia, on 17 March 1986, and he and his family had to cope with the Bosnian war rampaging through the country when he was only six. He recalled: "It was a hard time for everyone in the country. There wasn't much to eat, not really enough for three meals a day. I was very afraid every day. We were always having to hide when shots rang out or bombs fell. You could get shot at any time. I cried a lot in those days. Thank God the war is in the past."

2) Dzeko joined Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League side FK Zeljeznicar and made his debut in 2003, starting out as a midfielder and scoring five goals in 40 games in two years at the club.

3) He moved on to top flight Czech club FK Teplice in 2005 for €80,000, and was loaned out to second division FK Ústí nad Labem for the first half of the season. His time in the Czech Republic saw him converted into a striker - an effective switch which saw him named best foreign striker and finish second in the golden boot race in the 2006-07 season.

4) Having come up through the U19 and U21 ranks, Dzeko made his debut for the senior side against Turkey on 2 June 2007. He made an instant impact, scoring the equaliser for 2-2 as Bosnia went on to win the game 3-2.

5) Dzeko's goals caught the eye of VFL Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath, who took the striker to the Bundesliga for €4million, with Dzeko signing a deal until 2011.

6) He started brightly, with five goals in the first twelve matches, but was less successful in the second half, ending his first season in Germany with eight goals in 28 games.

7) Last season was a different story, though, as Dzeko became half of the most successful strikeforce in Bundesliga history alongside Brazilian frontman Grafite, beating Gerd Mueller and Uli Hoeness's record from 1972-73. Dzeko notched 26 of the pair's 54 goals which helped propel Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title.

8) Dzeko finished the season with a flourish as well, scoring two hat tricks - his first coming on 2 May against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in just 13 minutes.

9) After his goal-scoring exploits it is no wonder boss Magath sings Dzeko's praises. Magath says of Dzeko: "He is just the kind of striker a club would wish for. He is unselfish, has an accurate shot and header, and knows what to do with the ball the moment he receives it."

10) Although Muslim, Dzeko doesn't consider himself orthodox and prays once a day instead of the traditional five times.

If he doesn't consider himself orthadox, i doubt he'll participate in fasting.

I doubt he prays once a month

since you guys have ABSOLUTELY no idea what you are talking about, here it is. if the player is muslim, he will 100% be fasting, no doubt about it. and when dzeko says he isnt orthodox, all that means is he doesnt pray 5 times a day, in bosnia no one seems like a muslim, but the day ramadan comes, every1 starts going to the mosque and fasting, so trust me dzeko fasts. the thing is it WONT affect there performances, muslims have been doing this since they were kids, and they get a big good meal in the morning then again at night , so no worries. btw i just came on here to tell you this.

it's not all about meals though is it with footballers? It's more the drink.

what im trying to say is, there is no such thing as being a "orthodox" muslim. your either a muslim, or a "fake" muslim. bosnians are fake muslims. if you are willing to pray 5 times a day, all the other obligations to be considered a muslim arent even noticeable, if you pray 5 times a day that shows you really believe your faith. also if u dont pray 5 times a day ur not muslim, simple as that.

Fake is maybe a strong word but agree with other stuff

-- Sat Jul 30, 2011 4:04 pm --

But anyway, there's no chance that fasting won't affect someone's performance on the pitch at least a little bit. It just has to, you can't not eat and drink the whole day and run 90 minutes on +30 degrees without being hit.

But football players are strong people, athletes and it's certainly affect them less than would affect me. I've read that Real Madrid have a special programme for Muslim players during Ramadan, they have doctors and stuff who pick the right meal for them in the morning and on the evening so they could give the best of themselves.

It may look like a problem when you look it from the side - like "he's getting paid for his job and then he (maybe) underperforms because of his religion beliefs..." but believe me, if someone is devoted Muslim and I've heard that Yaya is (and lot of other players around the World), he won't make any compromise with that.

I remember a few years ago Kolo Toure stating that he used to fast during the week but not on match days. I didnt know that Gael Glichy was Muslim-can someone please confirm?

So is he not allowed to eat Michael Carrick for breakfast?

Stop asking stupid fucking questions. Of course he's not going to eat Michael Carrick for breakfast! Old Trafford meat is considered unclean.

-- Sat Jul 30, 2011 7:17 pm --

Thread has turned to shit.
Theres a fair few on here having an opinion on something they know the square root of fuck all about, stop worrying and give it a rest.

For Away games I doubt any muslim player will fast because when travelling your not obliged to fast. For home games I've heard players got out for a journey then comeback so this is considered travelling I heard one of the coaches talk about it.

Those clerics giving permissions for people to break a fast if they play football are doing that just to make some people happy to hear it, there's no any single way it could be allowed if it does not make their health and life in danger.

I'm pretty sure Yaya would fast and that he doesn't rate those "fatwas", I don't know for Clichy, haven't got idea he is Muslim at all and I don't see Dzeko is too religious at all. Yes he usually makes a dua pray before the game but I've seen him drinking beer when Wolfsburg won Bundesliga title so he's probably one of those "yeah, I'm Muslim but I don't care about Islam rules too much".

dzeko is unorthodox and prays only once a day... i pray only once a week and i am a muslim... bt i does fasting a lot... for a muslim, fasting is very important...

we're going to theology stuff now but that's a complete bullshit what you've said. Praying 5 times a day is strict Islamic rule, the main and most important one after saying you're Muslim and doing that doesn't make you a damn orthodox.

the quran says that you are allowed to drop fasting for doing hard physical jobs...

Find me that verse in Qur'an and I'l give you 10k in whatever currency you want. I'll bring them on your hands as I guess you're Bosnian, only my felow Bosnians are saying "Qur'an says" stuff even when they don't have idea what Qur'an says.
no dude... i am an indian.. and that is what we are thought here... there is another point too that if we are on travel or something,we dont compulsorily need to fast... if we miss fasting due to such problems,we can tally it out after ramadan too... thats what the imaam in my mosque said on his speech last friday... and i am really sorry if any of my comments offended you...
