Xabi Alonso pal, Spain are playing and Martinez who we have been linked with has been given a run out

Ah right, I was thinking, I don't know of an Alonso at Bilbao (I missed the 'on' bit, thought he meant Martinez had played a more forward role this season since the signing of some Alonso).

How's he doing? I don't have ESPN or I'd watch it myself.

-- Thu Jun 03, 2010 6:45 pm --

And Alonso is in his usual deep lying role and Martinez is now higher up the pitch.

Are they playing 4-4-2?

I think a Barry, Yaya partnership would be very successful. It's probably not attacking minded for plenty on here but it's robust and they are both more than able to supply our front men.

I agree, they'd need a creative player in front of them, maybe Ireland of last season, not this, or a new signing like Joe Cole or maybe Silva (although if you're playing only two proper centre midfielders then you're likely to have either wingers or 3 up front so Silva would be one of these players.) I'd like to see Barry as the holding midfielder and the Yaya and Martinez (or Milner) ahead of him driving forward when needed. I'd replace Barry with De Jong against the better footballing sides who move the ball a lot quicker though.

Well, IMHO I think they'd work as a pairing in a flat 442. I'm sure we'll go into different formations that include an attacking playmaker, but i dont think it's a necessity. good wingers will cut in and create from in midfield aswell as pushing down the line.

injury or no injury, Barrys been nothing short of wank for us and should not be in our starting line up next season.

Hopefully not. That would be disaster.

Agree with this somewhat, although I thought he started off well, had a poor match v. villa away and from then on really dissapointed me.

Matt D, I disagree, he never showed the form he did at Villa but he wasn't terrible, a lot of the time his contribution goes un-noticed because of the role he plays. There's a reason Capello likes him so much.

Smiles, if you were playing 4-4-2 the creativity would be coming from the wings so that'd be fine in my opinion, Arsenal's Invincibles played with Petit (Barry) and Vieira (Yaya) and their attacks came through Pires and Ljungberg out wide and they had Bergkamp, Henry and Vieira, who would push on, centrally. That worked fairly well lol.

I only mentioned the need for a creative player in front of Barry and Yaya as it seems Mancini will be using 4-3-1-2, 4-5-1 or 4-3-2-1 formations next season. If you were going to be playing 4-5-1, as you couldn't just have Tevez up front, you'd need support from the centre of midfield as well as the wings. If you're playing 4-3-1-2 I wouldn't want the 3 to have two holding midfielders, so Barry and Martinez and Yaya would be ok as both Martinez and Yaya would push on when required. If you're playing 4-3-2-1 I'd want one of the 3 centre midfielders to be creative too.

Exageration. Not easy to dominate a midfield when it's 2 against 5

Re: Yaya

do we want to pay that much?
