York away

Are you serious? All I can remember was getting a little high from the waves of ganja smoke weaving up the North Stand.

York away - there were a lot of spares available - people expected that (as usual) there would be demand on the day so came with mates' tickets and couldn't shift them.
Deadly serious. I felt like a stranger in Maine Road that night.

A cracking day (and night) out and as is so often the case watching City, the only thing that spoiled it was 90 minutes of football. That said, while it was our lowest ever ebb in terms of league position, when I was back at the hotel that evening and getting ready to go back out on the lash I distinctly remember checking the league table out on teletext and thinking that even though we were 12th we were only a handful of points off a play-off spot.

I also didn't attend that game but I was there also in the League Cup game. I remember my mates Dad driving us up there, it was November 1973......43 years ago!!
That was the season we lost in the final against Wolves.
Bloody hell it was.Don`t know how the shit we lost that final, but I remember Wolves goalie had one of the finest games ever seen in a Final. Also remember Rodney Marsh backheeling the ball right to the feet of the Wolves attacker, who scored the winning goal.

It was poisonous in the city end that day. The players looked visibly shocked by the abuse they were getting

That's how I remember it we absolutely battered Wolves that day but just could not get the second goal.
Then Rodney laid on their winner with a trademark flashy backheel.
I was with our fans but right next to where the Wolves fans were sat and will always remember the sickening feeling when Wolves got the winner and seeing their fans celebrate at close quarters.
Much preferred the the Newky game with Dennis's overhead.

A few less goals scored but at least our defense looked more solid back then unlike the keystone cops we have now:)

What I remember most about York away is that my first wife had left me the day before. True story that. Can't remember if I had a ticket or paid on the turnstile. I do remember thinking that a little thing like that wasn't going to stop me.

I remember telling you at Stoke that we were three years off the premiership and dropping down a division did nothing to change that never really doubted that until Wembley 85 mins in but only for a second or two.

It was actually Colchester Away
Sat tea time live on tv and we only got about 700 tickets
I went to every game that season and Leve blues made the atmisphere at every away game.
Give over. We were doing well by then and it was towards the end of the season so better weather.

Wrexham was after York so we were at our lowest ebb ever. It was boxing day so inconvenient and it was fucking freezing.

The REAL acid test for City fans.

I distinctly remember that and you were quite non-plussed about us going down at Stoke as a result - in fact we managed to get back up to the PL a year earlier than your prediction!

I'm not one to harp on about the past and juxtapose it with our current situation, but just seen this posted on Twitter and it's brought back some (bad) memories:

They were dark, dark days. Anyone on here used to post MCIVTA?

Colchester was far more inconvenient to get to than Wrexham to be fair and it wasn't exactly scorching at Layer Road.

FWIW, I thought both of those were great away days and from my own personal perspective the lowest ebb was Lincoln away midweek around October time. I couldn't get away from work early enough to travel on the Leve blues coach so had to make do with the official supporter's club coach from Maine Road. No beer allowed, no banter on the coach, listening to Radio 4, horrendous traffic problems as we approached Lincoln meaning I didn't have time for a single pint when I got there, and to top it all a 2-1 defeat. The epitome of a piss-poor away day.

Give over I remember it gave you a chance to give your new thermos flask a run out!

Lincoln was definitely my worse memory, as it was pre-Andy Morrison, and City were still getting bullied on a regular basis.
Terrible traffic, and I think they had to delay the kick off by 15 minutes. 2-0 down after about 20 minutes, and I seem to remember Jeff Whitley being subbed in the First Half, and thinking we'd never see him again.

Yes. Definitely the low point. It was pissing down. Traffic was a joke.
I stood next to curly watts. Never saw him again after this game.

I honestly think in watching City for almost 50 years that this game, and the one at home to Bury, were the worst matches. I actually think we played well at York but were unlucky to lose. It was the start of the comeback. The turning point was Wrexham and the second half against Stoke.
