If you’re trying to suggest that a visit to York Minster would have somehow made the experience more bearable than don’t bother.
I was also in the Main Stand at Luton and it was shite. Lincoln was worse than shite, and looking back, the whole season was a masochistic tour of our worst footballing nightmares, that has somehow been reinvented as a rose tinted badge of honour.
In fact, the bizarre reality that we’ve now been in the Champions League for longer than we were out of the Premier League in the late 90s, just adds to the mythology.
No passing-out-from-the-back in 1998-99. Just stale burgers, horseshit, and lots of raw anger.
Certainly not a rose-tinted badge of honour for me. While it's nice to say we were there when we were truly shit - being there then makes the recent good times feel even better IMO - it was no real hardship, because following City has always been much more than just the football for me and back then I was travelling away to most games with a cracking bunch of people in the Levenshulme branch, and every trip with them was an event in itself regardless of what tripe was being served up on the pitch. If I'd been travelling on the official supporter's club coach to every away match as I did to the aforementioned Lincoln game then it would've been utterly wank.
Also, it's worth pointing out that it was actually a good season on the pitch once we started getting our shit together. After York, we didn't lose another away game in the league all season and we had the nail-biting drama of the play-off matches where we ultimately came out on top.
One of my favourite ever seasons following City without a doubt.
