No defender was in the area and the referee cancelled the goal as he said Player A was stood in an offside position when it rebounded back to him after player Bs shot

I cant get my head round how he could be offside!

There is a cracker on utube somewhere. Goalie goes up for a corner, defence clear it, midfielder carries it forward and passes to sprinting attacker with just a defender to beat. Offside! The goalie had not got back, hence only one defender between receiving attacker and the goal.
