I have to declare a conflict of interest on the first one. My Grandad was a carpenter for MGM and worked on 2001 (amongst other films) building the sets - particularly the rotating big wheel inside the Odyssey spacecraft.

It is in about 20 lists lol I was surprised myself another great movie.

American test audiences have a lot to answer for though.
