For me it was going into school the day after being relegated to the third tier at Stoke in 98. I was dreading it, being one of very few blues in a school of mainly rags I was used to being targeted, and I knew what was coming.
I approached the school gates, turned the corner and there was a group of about 7 or 8 lads literally stood there waiting for me, chanting "going down" and songs about playing Macclesfield etc. The worse part was they weren't even United fans, they were Stockport County fans, who were now a division above us.
The rags had got bored long before that and some almost even felt sorry for us by this point. That really was as bad as it gets.
