    Old Maine Road photos thread

On the white wall, near to where it becomes black, is where I watched most of my early City games from as a ten year old in 1952/53 season. My uncle and his mate used to stand behind on the first step of the terrace.

A church at Maine Road? Well before my time.

Competitive matches under floodlights didn’t happen until the 1955/56 season. The first floodlit Football League game was Portsmouth v Newcastle on 22/2/56 (I had to look that up!)

    Manchester City 3-4 River Plate - 2.2.1952

This match was my first visit to Maine Road at the age of ten. It took place on the day of the FA Cup 4th Round. City, having been knocked out in the 3rd Round (by Wolves after a replay) had a free Saturday and were therefore available opponents for the Argentines.

Right. Let’s bring back the community singing and you can all sing “She’s a Lassie from Lancashire” and wave your song sheets in the air. And you can see it all on the newsreel in the cinema next week.

On this day - a million on the streets

I recall the song being sung by the crowd at the City end at Wembley following the FA Cup Final in 1956, along with the chant of “Where’s Henry Rose? “ after he had predicted a 3-0 victory for Birmingham in that morning’s Daily Express.

What was the first City match after you were born?

There was a period of bad weather in February that year. City’s 5th round tie at Blackburn was postponed at least twice and finished up being played on a Monday night five days before the 6th round date when City beat Spurs at Maine Road.

    Man City v Swindon 1964 /1965 Season

City had been mid table all that season and had been knocked out of the FA Cup by Shrewsbury Town prior to the Swindon game which I didn’t attend. I was there for the next home game (v Swansea) which City won 1-0. By then Johnny Crossan had been signed from Sunderland, which raised the fans‘...

Name the players in this 1964/5 squad

I think the photo was taken at the public practice match at Maine Road on 17th August 1957 between the first team (Blues) and reserves (Maroons). City should have played Sheffield Wednesday in the opening game of the season on the following Saturday (24th August), but that game was postponed...

Name the players in this 1964/5 squad

According to records Colin Barlow scored City’s only goal in that game and he isn’t on the photo. Incidently, I think the game was played on the same night as the United v West Brom. 6th Round FA Cup replay.

Shawcross was one of my favourite City players at that time.I likened him to Jim Baxter of Rangers and Scotland.
