“Not In My Lifetime'

Not sure whether worth starting a new thread - so putting it here….

But wondering if any team that has won the champions league has ever been as low in their own domestic league as third tier ?

I think from those depths ( 12th in December 1998 ) we may have risen higher than any team has to become Champions league winners.

In less than 25 years we’ve gone from that low ebb to now

Just WOW !

There's only been 23 winners of the European Cup so this should be easy to work out...

The only 2 would be Forest and Villa.

A couple - Dortmund & PSV were founded late so went through the 3rd division on their way up to the top, but haven't been since.

Villa got promoted from the 3rd divsion in 1972, 2nd division in 1975, won the league in 81 and Europan Cup in '82.

Forest were in the 3rd division in 1952 and won in 1979 (and 1980) and obviously post-success dropped down to league 1, the third tier in the mid-00's.

Keep an eye on Wrexham think they’ll go up again next season! They have owners who will stick around and spend the money but with ffp it’s much harder than the days of Forrest and Villa doing it..

Were Juve relegated one or 2 divisions?
