Elections

Well that wasn't very good for Labour was it.

First opposition since 1985 to lose English council seats and near enough wiped out in Scotland.

Are Labour going to do the decent thing for British politics now and replace Corbyn with someone electable. The country needs a strong opposition to stop the worst excesses of the Tories.

I think the simple answer is no.

If they tried to replace Corbyn now they would end up with either: a) Corbyn or b) McDonnell.

If Corbyn were run over by a bus tomorrow, it is unlikely that McDonnell or any Corbyn supporting MP could win over a sufficient number of MPs to nominate him/her to get them on the ballot.

If Corbyn were challenged in such a way as to force another leadership election, a process difficult to envisage, he would not be required to find MPs to nominate him, as he is the incumbent, in such a situation Corbyn would be re-elected leader of the Party.

So the Blairites will have to hire a bus if they want to get back in.

Labour are a lost cause in Scotland now, which makes their position as a possible ruling party in the rest of the country difficult. The SNP have the left wing vote there and those who took the difficult decision to swap a lifetime of voting red to yellow will not swing back unless something catastrophic happens to the nationalists.

Labour's future is a long term pact with the Lib Dems. The country must have a strong opposition.
Yes, I would agree, the country does need viable opposition, so the Lib Dem route looks their only option. Whilst the world and
his wife have been telling Labour that Corbyn is unelectable, the £3 quid a pop membership rolled out by Miliband, resulted in every far left
Trot and Anarchist in the land joining up, together with more than a few naughty Tories, and the resultant surge in membership has blinded them to the
harsh realities of the British electorate.

This much is true but the over riding fact is the grass roots are overwhelmingly in support of Corbyn. If they replaced Corbyn with a Blairite it would be suicide for Labour. They are stuck with Corbyn now, they should never have put him on the ballot in the first place. Think of how many people have joined the party just because of Corbyn.

I did read (cant remember where) that even if Corbyn did not win the argument about being automatically on the ballot he would still just about get the required number of nominations. He would lose the support of those MPs who nominated him "to have a conversation" but that would be offset by a combination of MPs who would have supported him last time but didn't think anyone else would, and MPs giving in to the threats of deselection.
