How this summer's transfers have actually cost us nothing

I'm not making any assumption. If their wages were £45m in 2016/17 and total wages were £195m, then in the following year total wages (if we didn't sign anyone else) would be £150m. That's a saving we get by not paying them full stop.
But are we really saving money if there was no commitment to pay them beyond their contract?

Yes. Because we aren't paying it whether or not we were committed to it. I do see what you mean but think you're being a little too pedantic about the use of the word "saved". Would you settle for something like "the outgoing players have freed up £45m of wages from the budget"?

interesting post thanks PB.

Looks like Pep is here for the long haul and has maybe told the owners give me the money and i will win the CL for you within 5 years?? He certainly has bought players for the future here.

Talking of the future, seeing the government are banning petrol & diesel cars from 2040, what the hell will happen to us when we wont have any money from the oil??????
We are doomed i tells yer! DOOOOOmed

Sorry mate if I’m being a little bit anal haha. Just couldn’t get my head around how saving wages from outgoing players (that we weren’t supposed to pay anyway) would help allay the cost of our incoming transfer. Just thought it was worth asking. Anyway, carry on mate!

All going as planned, we'll be getting :

Hart
Caballero
Sagna
Zabaleta
Mangala
Clichy
Kolarov
Fernando
Delph
Nasri
Nolito
Navas
Bony

As first team players off the wage bill, and Yaya's taken a massive paycut.

We've added 5, and I don't see them earning too much more then the ones they're replacing so we'll be making a massive saving.
I reckon that team could make the play offs in the championship :)

The point was that it's not just about net fees, as Arsenal fans would have you believe, but about the total cost of ownership of players.

If we release a player paid £200k a week and buy one for £35m that we pay £60k a week, it actually has no impact on the bottom line as both "cost" us £10m a year, even though we show a negative net spend.
