Having problems with our interweb, been on to Sky and they've tested everything and even sent us out a new router to see if that's the problem...this has happened twice in the past few years. Now.....apart from my main PC all the other laptops, printers, phones, Tv ( Netflix, Amazon etc etc ) all work. The problem is intermittant, highly annoying and I'm convinced it's the main PC, forgive my lack of understanding and the correct use of terminology but by a process of the above elimination, I think the problem is the internet reciever ( ?? )in the main PC. Do I scrap it, it's a fair old age and get a new one or....pay some oik a shite load of money at PC world to fix it, leaving me with a still old PC and the problem possibly likely to reappear. Answers on a postcard blah blah blah

Firstly, check the WiFi is on on the PC. It should show as a little WiFi symbol bottom right, but otherwise use search for network settings. Something may have turned itself off, so see if it's working and if it can see any networks - if you can see random ones, they're probably your neighbour's which would mean it's working but can't see yours which would be weird. If there's nothing, it's not working at all.

You might need to move it, but try connecting the PC to the router using a Cat5 cable - it'll plug into the back of the PC in something that looks like a big phone socket.

If it then works, it's the WiFi to your PC. You've probably got a dongle for it if it's an older one, but you can buy a new one pretty cheap. They connect to a USB port and should then allow you to connect to the network.

Good luck

From your post I’m not clear what the problem is.

Are you saying your internet is slow, but only on your main PC?

Every other device you have connects and works fine.

Is that right?

If so, what constitutes slow - buffering videos on pornhub? Blue moon taking ages to load?

(Don’t go to PC World and pay loads of cash, there’s a few options once we know what the actual issue is)

Run the internet troubleshooter. Press start, type "find and fix network problems", press enter, go through that.

No joy?

See if one of the procedures below helps you fix this problem.

Reset the network settings:
1. Press "Windows + I" and select "Network & Internet > Advanced network settings";
2. Select "Network Reset";
3. Select "Reset Now", and at the confirmation screen, select "Yes";
Note: The PC will need to be restarted.

4. Now open Start and type cmd;
5. Right-click on "Command Prompt" in the result list and select "Run as administrator";
6. At the Command Prompt, type the following commands one at a time and press Enter:

netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

7. Restart your PC and see if the issue is resolved.

If it persists, reinstall the network driver.

Before starting the procedure, go to the support area of your computer manufacturer's website and download the latest network driver.
(If you cannot find it, let me know the manufacturer and model of your computer)

Uninstall the current driver:
1. Open "Device Manager" (Windows + X and select Device Manager);
2. Expand "Network adapters";
3. Right-click on the adapter and select "Uninstall device";
(It may have more than one adapter, if you don't identify the correct one, send a screenshot "Windows + Shift + S")
4. On the confirmation screen, check "Attempt to remove the driver for this device" and click "Ok";
5. Restart the PC.

Install the driver you downloaded from the manufacturer.
For that last one, windows will probably install a driver when you restart, don't worry about finding a specific one yourself.

Still no go?

Press start, type "cmd". see the option on the right that says, run as administrator. click that. You'll get a command line window. type "sfc /scannow" and press enter. if it says it finds errors, run it again, until it says it finds no errors.

when you've got a 'found no errors' from sfc, type "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"

wait for it to finish. restart.

It's not that it's slow...it just stops working intermittantly on the main pc. When the icon shows that it's connected it work OK...YouTube video, streams etc. Then it will just stop and the globe icon is shown. Gone though the tests on screen and nothing seems to improve it.
It's fucked. Chuck it.

Likely your wifi adapter. If it happens again right click the wifi icon and select "Troubleshoot Problems". It will most likely say resetting internet adapter then it should start working again. If not tell us what it says.
