Have worked as a volunteer at a soup kitchen in central Manchester for some years , we have had a dramatic rise in visitors over the last 6 months. Manchester has apart from London about the highest rate of homeless in the UK.
A number of factors contribute to this issue not least government policies , it has got worse its going to get worse. Poverty staring you in the face in one of the richest countries in the world,
If you are moved to help do not give money , buy a sandwich or a coffee, cash would be spent on drugs or drink
Talk to them if you care , gambling, drink, drug,s bad luck, redundancy, illness, stupidity, mental illness or lack of family/friends support , its not a normal life style of choice, acknowledge their existence a smile and a kind word go a long way.
We have a number of season ticket blues who volunteer, no rags, take some pride that we care in a dreadful situation , My hope is that we realize that there but for the grace of God go I and act accordingly with compassion.
