Fair play to whomever wrote that PGMOL statement (bits in bold) - absolute masterpiece in slight of hand

“Jon Moss was in a good position to see that a Liverpool player deliberately played the ball before it fell to Harry Kane in the penalty area...."

Maybe he was in a great position. But this seems to be vaguely worded to allow for the possibility that the touch came from Wynaldum and not Loveren. That is crucial because of the wording of the offside rule and the term deliberately

"...He then correctly judged that Kane was fouled by Lorius [sic] Karius..."

Kane was hardly touched, more brushed, and going away from goal at pace, but ok....

"...However, given the speed of the attack he was uncertain of the identity of the Liverpool player who kicked the ball..."

Nope. That wasn't what was said. It was about Lovren and the ref admitted that he didn't have a scooby whether he did or not.

"...Eddie Smart, having identified that Kane was in an offside position, correctly sought clarification on whether Dejan Lovren had deliberately played the ball. His question created some momentary confusion when Eddie asked if “Lovren” had touched the ball. Moss knew a Liverpool player had touched the ball but not that it was Lovren..."

This really isn't what Moss said at all, is it? It is a blatant spin.

“...He then asked a question to his fourth official Martin Atkinson and acknowledges referencing ‘TV’ was misguided..."

Interesting choice of words, "misguided"! Did he think VAR was in operation....or perhaps he let slip that off-field officials have been having help from TV for some while, despite this not being sanctioned by FIFA. I know what I believe. Misguided not being explained leaves things suitably grey.

"..Atkinson did not reply to the question and so had no involvement in the decision..."

Absolutely true....because 1 second after being asked the ref decided he was giving the pen anyway.

"...Having properly reflected on the questions asked, Jon knew a Liverpool player, now identified as Lovren, had played the ball and that no offside offence had occurred..."

This is basically made up. We all heard what Moss said and that the player in question wasn't in doubt, it was Lovren.

"...He then awarded the penalty. For the avoidance of doubt, Atkinson did not view a television monitor and did not relay any information to the on‑field officials..."

He wasn't given the "chance" given that 1 second after being asked Moss gave the pen.

- They didn't know they were being listened to and were caught out
- They aren't happy about refs being miked up as it uncovers the thought process around decisions, and incompetence in them
- The truth about off field assistance is out

Questions now need to be asked about legitimacy of this - the officiators of a multi-billion pound industry are lying to us.

Why?

You mean just like Clattenberg was told to change his report to say Adebayor was booked for time wasting and not for celebrating in front of arsenal fans.

Is it possible that when Moss asked if the 4th official had anything from TV he was not referring to Atkinson watching TV but being told by some SKy official (old man grey hair) what decision to give?

I have been saying for some time that surely somebody with technical knowledge could pick up the frequency and record all the officials conversations.

That would be an eyeopener I suspect.

We all know that if they are not bent that they are certainly incompetent and that in any other line of work would no longer be employed.

I think we know why Lee Mason is always holding his earpiece. The 4th official telling him how to referee....
Lee, Lee follow the ball. No the round thing. That's it. Blow the whistle. The whistle. Lee blow the whistle. Good now point towards the goal. The white rectangle. No the other one....

Find it highly unusual for PGMOL to issue such a statement backing up the referee, this is juts one or two incidents in a whole season of questioned decisions. What makes this game so special? The mere fact that on this occasion we could actually hear what the officials were saying and doing?

On the actual decisions, Kane was offside for the first regardless of whether Loveren touched the ball, and TV replays seem to back this up. I also think he's made the most of any contact and taken a leaf out of Ashley Young's book, which should help clear up any question marks about his character following his lunge in our match earlier this season - he wants to win at all costs and is willing to push the rules to do so, as other do to be fair.

As for the second penalty, Van Dijk clearly tries to pull away but there is contact. However, and I would say this is crucial, the contact is initiated by Lamela falling into Van Dijk in an effort to shield the ball, which he wasn't in control of and was there to be contested. Lamela is at an angle and leaning in to Van Dijk's knee, if he doesn't do that then there is no contact, and again he goes down like a ton of bricks, and again, it is not the referee who initially gives it.

Above all, regardless of whether the decisions were right or wrong, the process we saw in Moss trying to get to the bottom of it shows how woefully inept the decision making system is and gong to the 4th official for a 'TV' decision is very concerning - slip fo the tongue, a regular occurrence? Plenty of times in any match you see the ref go to his earpiece, unless they submit to an independent or open sharing system where anyone ca her the conversation then it will remain questioned, the fact that they aggressively oppose this move is only going to further darken assumptions.

The old man with grey hair is not called Martin perchance?
