Seat Ibiza DSG Gearbox Failure - Advice

Insurance job burn it on the local croft.

Well if the dealer has admitted the wrong oil was used then surely they are at fault. The thing with DSG is if there is a problem they have you by the bollacks as no back street mechanic has the tools to sort it out, main dealer that's it unfortunately.
VW group recalled a huge number of DSGs, this car included to change the synthetic oil to mineral.. this car had done 20,000 miles on the synthetic

41000 on a full dealer service history, one owner from new. Surely there is a fairly sound argument that you have been sold goods that are either faulty or not fit for purpose?
I'd have thought that this age and mileage is not a reasonable time for such catastrophic failure.

Sadly, not in law. And it's not as if he bought it from the dealer network with a manufacturer's warranty. Buy privately and you will generally save money but take your chances. You can't have it both ways. I would think there is little chance of a more substantial "goodwill" settlement from Seat.

The VW group's DSG gearbox is known to be a problem.

That is plan B... garage in Cannock have a brand new box that "should fit"... but for £2100 fitted it's too much of a risk I think
For 2 grand less I'd take the chance if they give warranty.
Or do the sums and fit it then use as trade in if it makes sense.
At it stands you've got a pile of spares.
Spend 2 grand and you've got a 5 grand(?) trade in.

Brand new? Hmm, sounds cheap but is just about conceivable from a scrapper. Ask around elsewhere, including scrap dealers. Google it because there used to be a way of getting multiple quotes for a spare part. Then add on labour, which must be substantial, but which again can be gauged with a bit of research.

As for "brand new", simply check the itemised parts and labour prices with two or three bona fide dealers.

Finally, what does the Cannock garage mean by "should fit"?

The new box is at a VW independent.. new, never fitted and warrantied.. the box however is for a 1.4 my son's is a 1.2.. the box not the issue , the control unit / ECU may be different.. they could use the control unit from my son's car IF it isn't faulty.. without stripping the box we won't know...

There is another auto-box specialist (even though the DSG isn't strictly an auto but a manual box with two clutches) in Cannock who a friend (trader) has used many times so that might be the best option.. let them strip it and diagnose it properly...

Either non-Seat main dealer route would be cheaper and would have warranty despite not being a Seat one...

Difficult to justify spending 4K or even 2K on a car that's only worth just over 4K with a working gearbox. Can you get a cheap scrap yard one, swap it to get it running and trade it in quick?
