The Paper Tax Disc

If the parking Gestapo were issued with ANPR devices, and their companies paid a modest commission, surely the number of offenders would tumble? Presumably the economics don’t stack up. Or perhaps the thinking isn’t joined up.

As said earlier, not sure coloured paper discs would work well in the era of cheap printers and the Internet.
Or maybe scrap the tax put up fuel to compensate then you pay for what you use which will include the 000's of foreign registered vehicles currently using our roads maybe dip wagons coming in and make a retrospective charge for the fuel in the tank.

whatever the solution is it seems no disc isn't the best one !

They have their own fleet of ANPR vans

yes - they use old model Astra estates too. Thing is that when we had council parking wardens, bobbies on the beat and so on they could see if a parked car was displaying a valid disc or not and take the appropriate action. That meant - pre-sorn days - people had to be inventive by parking cars on spare ground, round the allotments and near the council garages ( aaahhh the good old days - miss you Dad lol ) - now they can just park with impunity on the street as no official will know. These vans require the offender to drive past them - I doubt tax dodgers form an orderly queue to do that ha ha.

The only place I know of where these tour the streets is London - have seen TV shows where they do than and lift cars off the street for no tax. It is however probably cost effective to do that in The Smoke

Have 'Producers' been scraped now?

I would presume so. A DVLA check can tell them whether you have a valid license whether that car is taxed or insured...... no need to let a driver leave the scene with a producer as a result. If they are not satisfied with the details you give them they can do various things to check and ultimately arrest the driver and seize the car until satisfied offences - including giving false details - haven't been committed.

Government after government have for some reason rejected this obvious solution. They tax fuel heavily anyway without a hint of shame so why not just add to it and dress it up as spreading the load more fairly?

God help us if they did this though ....we are the only country in Europe that applies fuel duty to the base price and then applies VAT to the fuel duty (essentially taxing a tax) if they buried road tax in it as well we would have no idea what we would be paying

I think because to purchase road tax the vehicle has to be insured and have a valid mot neither of which would be needed at a petrol station.
