I think because to purchase road tax the vehicle has to be insured and have a valid mot neither of which would be needed at a petrol station.

But if you are happy to drive with no insurance or mot chances are you aren't going to be fussed about tax.

Used to be easy to spot though if it wasn't taxed.

They have their own fleet of ANPR vans

Or maybe scrap the tax put up fuel to compensate then you pay for what you use which will include the 000's of foreign registered vehicles currently using our roads maybe dip wagons coming in and make a retrospective charge for the fuel in the tank.

This has long been my favoured approach. Everyone pays, no dodging. Foreign drivers contribute their fair share and high mileage drivers pay the most.

However, given the growing massive shift towards hybrids and electric cars, maybe it’s not the future after all.
