What is a 7 Day NHS?

Saw an interview with a doctor who said it's mainly the support staff who don't work weekends therefore the same level of care cannot be achieved, if the steamroller the junior doctors next up will be the lowly receptionist who will be told to work weekend for shit pay or be sacked. This is just the start of privatising the NHS, if 1% of junior doctors resign that's 500 doctors gone tomorrow, the system will come crashing down. I think the government has picked a fight they can't win this time and it's about time, good on the doctors, and if they withdraw emergency care I'd stand behind him them it's that twat Hunt who the public should bemoaning not the doctors they are backed into a corner.

Illustrates the point really, New labour left 6 years ago and this fuckwit has done nothing.
Give the Jester a ring to speak to him about his pamphlet and the privatisation of the NHS
Its here https://whatwouldvirchowdo.files.wo...mocracy___an_agenda_for_a_new_model_party.pdf
Make sure you ask for him on a Saturday, it is after all a working day, you maybe surprised at the reply, tbf you wont.
You're doing it again. It's all too political with you. I'm saying there's a debate to be had, but you're just too stubborn and one dimensional. Look at the pay rates for weekend work in the NHS, then tell me a fair wage isn't being paid - some of the rates are astronomical. Fair play to the unions on this one, they've played a blinder over the years, and done a cracking job for their members, however if people want weekend care on a par with weekdays, then something has to give.

Anyway, if you continue to just spout on about the Tories then I'm fucking coming for you.........

Do you know how much the NHS pays admin/nurses/doctors for Saturday and Sunday working? Oh, don't forget night rates. Oh, and any time after 8 o'clock at night is paid at night rate as well. They are paid fairly, anyone who says different is wrong.

There's a debate to be had, but if all you're going to say is 'bad Tories' then it's pointless. Blair crippled the NHS with PFI. Some of the fucking bills coming into the NHS for day to day tasks like putting a shelf up are fucking ludicrous.....all down to Labour.
I agree about the PFI Malg but.... The question here is why are the Government looking to increase the numbers of people working at the weekends, the pay is a separate discussion. What services are they looking to deliver at the weekends? Regardless of what the wage bill will be, what are we going to get at weekends?

Clinics for one. You'll be hard pushed to get a weekend clinic. Fine for a lot, but not for those in work. Maybe even evening clinics, but most finish at 4 o'clock.

I know a colleague who was in a ward and told that she may be able to leave on the Friday, but the doctors couldn't agree (fair one, and they kept her in). She then did not seen another doctor until Monday, as there weren't enough on. The care on a lot of wards at weekends is lacking, but people are sick all week, not just Monday to Friday. However, it's not just junior doctors, it's consultants as well. If they cut a lot of management maybe they could afford the cover?

It's different in A&E where the service is 24/7, and a brilliant service at that given some of the tossersvthey deal with at weekends and nights.

The emergency care is the big one. If they withdrew that it would fall down. Fair play to them up to now as they've not taken that step, but if Hunt forces their hand then it'll happen......and they'll have the backing of the whole of the NHS.

Right I get you.

To deliver clinics at the weekends you're going to need more than just doctors, you're going to need tames of people, Nurses, Assistants, Receptionists, Admin, not to mention cleaners and everything else that goes with it. Why clinics at weekend? If that's what we want (and to be fair I don't) then the first thing we need is more doctors, get them on board first, create the resources required to deliver and then look to implement change.

Why would anyone want clinics at the weekend? Because that's the time when people who work aren't working? Well if those folks worked weekends then they would have rest days during the week and they could go then. There are many jobs that don't deliver services 7 days a week, banking, local authorities, Dentists, and most places that do deliver seven days a week services are resourced to do so, the NHS isn't.

I feel this government has chosen to pick a fight with the wrong people, just like Heath did in '74, we all know what happened then and subsequently, I really would prefer to not go down that road again with the NHS but I fear that's where we're heading.

Hunt has failed abysmally in his job and in negotiating with the doctors and the working relationship is completely broken now - you have to question whether or not that was a deliberate ploy.

As far as I'm understanding it's basically saying as far as the NHS is concerned every day will be a working day meaning no extra pay for unsociable hours. So at the minute a doctor in a hospital who worked Saturday or Sunday would get Tim and a half or double pay for nights.
And the buzz word of junior doctor is very misleading to the general person, a junior doctor is basically the same qualification as your GP, they are all the Doctors who work on the wards, in a+e and perform surgery etc but don't yet have a specific field or specialism.

All the things the government are suggesting regarding working extra hours etc the "junior doctors" have already been doing which is why there has been a social media campaign by them to show the hours they put in.

I think the irony-o-meter has bust here. The first thing you said was Blair wrecked it, there is a debate to be had if you are going for Labour...... etc etc

I agree, that was the last point made in the cut out.
Always worth a read http://www.thecanary.co/2016/02/11/...tract-jeremy-hunt-just-forced-junior-doctors/
CHunt wants to run it down and sell it off, no ifs no buts.

All going wrong for Hunty.

Half of the NHS bosses whose signatures were used to justify Jeremy Hunt's imposition of a new contract for junior doctors have now rescinded their apparent support.

Ten chief executives of NHS trusts across England say they do not support the imposition, despite their names being attached to a letter advising the government to "do whatever it deems necessary to end uncertainty".....
