Monaco are a really fun team to watch. Full credit to them for playing football, not emphasizing the anti football so common in champions league. They took their goals brilliantly. Falcao is a beast. We played with an edge all night. They couldn't handle Sterling and Sane... and Aguero was moving their backline all over the place. Rewatching the game, I think Stones gets unnecessary criticism. Otamendi's positioning in Pep's system, and our struggles with playing out from the back under pressure are the problem. Great time to be a blue. The great entertainers.

Yeah, they killed us last night.
Rewatching the game, Fabinho was totally under his level... He wasn't positioning well when our side backs was up in front.
Sidibe and Bakayoko played injured, so i won't blame them that much. But Fabinho was really dissapointing last night.
Credits for Sané, Sterling and De bruyne tho, for sure. Especially the first one. I'm in love with this guy.

How does the away goals rule work?

It only comes into affect after extra time?

I found last night's game the most nerve shredding, exhilarating match I've seen in years. It was like some of the matches from the 50s especially from the European cup of those days. And I marvelled at the attacking talent on show - our own front five, and also the lads from Monaco, who have dazzled our press. I raged about some of the defending, but I suspect that only one of our back 5 (or 6) will be in the team next season. Watching it again in the warmth of our lounge, however, I was overwhelmed again with admiration for the quality of the attacking play. I'm not defending our 'keeper or theirs and I'm not forgetting Stones or Ottamendi or Monaco's failings at corners but what I do think is that defenders will make mistakes when under pressure for the whole 90 minutes. Pep will change the personnel and reduce the errors but he won't eradicate them. The other thing I'm convinced of is that our pres has swallowed the idea of "keeping it tight at the back " as a result of its love affair with Mourinho and, more recently, Conte and Pochettino. We have faced the two highest scoring attacks in Europe this season and beaten them both at the Etihad. If you try to keep it tight at the back against Barca or Monaco sometime in 90 minutes they will find a way through- at least once. Spurs came away with two 2-1 defeats. We won 5-3. Defensive mistakes are built in to Pep's style - but the plan is to force the other team to make more than we do. It produces nerve shredding, exhilarating matches, which we win most of the time.

The point of the away goals rule is, if anything, to obviate extra time. If Monaco wins 2-0, they go through. If they win 3-1, they go through. If they win 4-2, they go through. In essence, we've got to hold them to a draw of any sort, or, say 2-1. (Or beat them, hey, anything's possible)

A Liverpool fan who does not know how the away goals rule works? I take it you arent old enough to remember the numbing, soul destroying backpass to Grobellaar and repeat shitball that you used to play in the 80s, especially during those magical European nights, when being in a semi catatonic state was slightly more appealing

Watched the game again, anybody notice Sanes flick with his right foot onto his left running at top speed? It is amazing he did something similar v Wet Spam, great player, him, Sterling, Jesus, Aquero with KDB and Merlin we are one hell of a side when all fit. Looks great for future if we can sort defence who knows what we are capable of ;-)

Only just come down from that, incredible football match.

What I would say after it, is that we are going to need to score at least once, but I'd still try and counter it just incase we don't.

We have to get Kompany fit for the return game. It's critical. I'd play him alongside Kolarov at centre back, with Zabaleta and Sagna as full backs.

I can't believe how bad Otamendi was last night. It was actually funny. He's just not helping Stones development in the slightest. He doesn't read the game, and goes to ground far too easily.

In my mind I'm thinking we need to sure ourselves up for the return journey but at the same time, maybe attack is the best form of defence.

Just read the report in the star, if you can call it one, all about monaco and their 3 goals.
To be fair they did say city scored 1st, didnt even mention the 4th and 5th goals.
Slung the paper away in disgust.
Thought the english press supposed to report on the english teams, l'm fucking livid.
wait a minute.... you bought the Daily Star?!

Hello guys !
AS Monaco fan here, i'll spent some time with you for the following 3 weeks :)

First of all, sorry for my bad english.

So... What a game it was. We got a lot of regrets :/

- I think Jardim outclassed Pep tactically. He putted a lot of pressure on both left and right back and stones, forcing City to let caballero OR otamendi doing the first pass. Wich was pretty awfull for you.
- I see a lot of posts blaming the ref.. Why? Let be honest, there is no awfull mistake. He maybe showed yellow card too easyli for both sides, but except that... There is even maybe a foul on the kun goals.
Aguero didn't played well since he dived before the contact with Subasic
- We let you came back in the game by our own... We gave you 4 free goals. Drive me crazy :/
Never saw Subasic doing a mistake like that in 4 years... And Sidibe cost us 2 goals. Falcao also took a penalty shot awfully shooted when we got Fabinho on the pitch, who never ever missed one, and always take them on another level.
- I keep hope for the return. Subasic, Fabinho were awfull last night. Jemmerson was out, Sidibe and most important Bakayoko played injured. I think if you guys come a bit too confident, we can do it.
- Pep obviously understood the weak point of our defense : Subasic is a goalkeeper that always stay on his line, and we got a small line-up... The free kick taken by City were amazingly well shooted, in an area where we are very, very, very weak.
- I love Sané, and David.
- Congrats to Willy. Not sure that Bravo would have done better. The penalty save is clearly the turning point.

Thanks City for the game, and for the welcoming in manchester! Cya around! :)
Sorry mate but I've watched the Aguero incident over and over and it's a foul. A clear foul with no attempt to play the ball. It should have been a penalty and a sending off. Watching the keepers reaction he knows it too.
Don't know how you can claim that a coach who's team shipped 5 goals tactically outfought his opposite number. Monaco are a fast attacking team but they are no match for top premier league opposition like city. Now that they need a 2 goal win from the home leg I predict a very big away win for City, probably 3 or 4 goals to one

They were more than a match for top premier league opposition like Spurs though tbf, they absolutely dicked them. Long way from being over this tie, but we've put ourselves in the driving seat with that 5th goal and Willy save at the end.

Watched it back this morning, bloody hell lol, attack was going to win the day and we out gunned them, need to score again over there, betablockers all round first lol

- No it's not a penalty at all, since the kun dive way before the contact. If he didn't, yes it was. But here, it's just a dive and a yellow card. Tho, at real speed, i dunno how the ref saw this. But its extremely well called.

- We gave you 4 free goals by individual errors. Nothing to do with tactical. The pressing was awesomely well thinked. A lot of our players was under their level or injured, tho, it's only a 2 goal average when we manage to put 3 away. If Falcao make is penalty, it was probably over, even tough i respect City for their spirit last night to come back over a déficit twice. 5/3 is pretty unfair at the regard of the game. You shoot 6, made 5. Clearly the lack of experience for our side, and an unlucky night for some of our players where they doesn't have a lot of them (Subasic, Fabinho).

I hope your players will be that much confident that you are.
I'm not disrespecting City, and of course you were the big favorite here. But don't underestimate Monaco. We lost this game almost alone if you are fair in your anlysis. First of all by letting you back to easyly, secondly by individual mistake, and third, cause we played more game than any team in Europe, and the last 20 minutes, we clearly saw it.

C1 is just a bonus for us this year (won't have the same talk if we keep all our players next year), so, i hope anyway an enjoyable game on the second leg. And may the best goes through ;)

All three of Monaco's goals were self-inflicted.

Our first and final goal is us tearing them a new one.

Strangely, at no stage did I feel we would lose the game, and that the team and the crowd were invested enough not to allow that to happen (thanks ref)

I thought our Dave was absolutely sublime and their own Silva is someone we should be looking to fill his shoes with given half a chance.

I suspect if Gabby J had been playing, we would have been in on their goal even more than we achieved on the night.

We will score two goals for sure over there.

Otamendi was just horrible. He refuses to see beyond his own nose.

I felt exactly the same last night.... saw a few people comparing it to the QPR game on Twatter but I didn't get the heart attack inducing low last night that I did for the majority of the the other game
