Monaco post match

Excellent spirit, resilience and character shown last night.
However Pep is delusional if he thinks we can win the competition with a defence as terrible as that. We have spent £100 million plus over the last few seasons on new centre backs
but every one we have signed has major flaws in their game and make far too many errors.
The left back area was not addressed after last season either and we are now plugging that area with a midfielder. A whole new defence is needed more or less after this season.

Far too kamikaze for me and flawed logic with his after match press conference.

Pep got the tactics right

Fabinho: "They put in place a scheme to destroy our 4-4-2. We had to be moving all the time to block the spaces – it was difficult."

I'm not trying to getting arrogant at all, and i totally don't care about what the media said.
I just take a look at the rules, and they are clear : When a player dive without any contact, it's a yellow card. And of the day.

This will be my last engagement with you.

There was clear contact, it was a foul, it should have been a penalty and a red card.

What an unbelievable game and definitely one of the best matches I have seen. 2 wonderfully gifted attacking sides, but poor defensive sides.

Game is all about entertainment and Pep will always look to create and attack rather than defend. He will be successful with some new recruits in defence in the Summer, but even if we don't win everything we are certainly the Great entertainers

For the 10 times :

I'm not denying there was a clear contact, everyone saw that, but it was AFTER AGUERO DIVED.
So it's a yellow card. That's all, just deal with it. You won 5/3 and still yelling like if you were rubbish, on something that was really well called by the ref.

Look at the first one : As I said, Jardim outclassed Pep. Pressing stones and bot sides back all game long to let Willy and Otamendi do the first pass.
On the first goal, willy does a really bad pass, who lead to an easy pass from silva to fabinho, and a perfect assist by fabi.

Dunno how you can blame your def on both Mbappe And Falcao second's goals, who were just brilliant.

Yes he is 18 YO, but no one could have def this against this guy.
Yes, Falcao isn't anymore the one from Atletico Madrid, but he isn't neither Valere Germain. Stones, played it well, take the advantage from Rademel on the shoulder, but Falcao knew where the ball was while Stones was still looking for it.
Could have been more than 3 without a really good Caballero. And Falcao's ego.

Not a pen.

Its one day after the game guys, just be honnest and fair to discuss.

You are really reaching on this one. It's a bad pass from Willy, nothing else for the first goal, purely self-inflicted. We are pressed all the time and it was simply down to his lack of execution.

The second goal is truly horrific - schoolboy defending with Otamendi caught under the flight of a straight ball.

The third, again, Stones is clearly at fault because he attempts outmuscle Falcao and play out.

If you had simply said the three goals were incredible finishes, nobody in the world could argue.

Regardless, they are all a result of poor defensive lapses.

You actually stopped the defensive press after we scored the first goal, as Pep just dropped Yaya deeper into the hole to receive the ball out from the back - he didn't lose the ball all night.

If anything, it would appear that apart from your fantastic forward momentum, the only real evidence for it was targeting a midfielder playing at left-back.

It was no surprise how the course of the game changed once Zabaleta was introduced and Sagna moved across.

Monaco's 2nd goal was a pass straight over the top that should easily have been cut out. The 3rd goal was a massive mistake from Stones and not because he was tactically outclassed by the opposition coach. He should easily beaten Falcao to the ball and put it out. Instead he had a total brain fart. I hope you do stick around on here until after the 2nd leg because without City making mistakes at the back Monaco will get a good beating.

Yes agreed ;)
But if you look carefully the 70-minutes we pressed, we never did it on otamendi and willy, only cut Stones, Sagna and fernandinho first passes. That was what Jardim want.
For stones, yes he did, but as I said, it's falcao, so... How can you blame him ? I mean, it's not like Sidibe who's watching aguero.

Agreed for Yaya too, good moove by pep.
Not agreed for Zabaleta, more a momentum in my opinion were you phisically outclassed us. But I may have wrong, got to rewatch the game ;)

What would you know about football watching a poxy two team league week after week.

Pretty funny since all your 5 goals come from our mistakes, and Falcao+Subasic put you backed in the game with league 4 mistakes.

It's not a red card for a professional foul in the box if a penalty is given anymore

I actually think Agüero fell down into the 'keepers legs on purpose, he was going down before he was touched.

Agree and disagree. We have to improve our defending as a team. We can't be wide open as we are, or teams like Everton, Leicester can just hit the ball over the top and score staightforward goals.

But the goals we conceded last night were down to players getting caught one on one with their opponent. You rarely see Terry, Cahill etc or Smalling, etc get caught one on one as Stones did with Falcao. Stones held up Falcao and almost won it. In a more usual defence, he'd have held him up, and another defender would have come in and mopped up.

Against leciester I remember Vardy streaked past Kolarov, and last night Bappe just outsprinted Otamendi, that for me is not poor individual defending but the kind of thing that happens if you set up your team in a certain way.

Yeah, when you set the team up to have those two pillars of shite in them.

I haven't been following all of this discussion butI was impressed with Monaco. At the game, I was hopeful at half time because we were creating chances and I thought we could get back in it, but I was also feeling that yet again a game has been taken away from us by a ref.

I watched it back later on TV and I thought the ref got most things right. Aguero did not dive. Your keeper goes through his shins. But the keeper gets a touch first. I think the other decisions were right including your penalty. At the time I did not have a clue why that was given.

I thought your midfielder, bappe and Falcao were brilliant. I think both managers deserve massive credit for the way in which their teams played. I think city would be more successful if we played a defensive midfielder instead of Toure. There were times when you were counter-attacking and you were just running through our midfield and getting one on one with our defenders without doing anything special - that has happened so many times this season, it's remarkable that we haven't done anything about it. This is not an issue about players, but about the system that Guardiola wants to play.

Just watching a recording of the match.

The officials should be kicked out of international refereeing.

Shockingly poor judgements.

Yeah, when you set the team up to have those two pillars of shite in them.
You could play Matt Hummels or David Watson or many of the great defenders like Tony Adams and one on one they would get destroyed by fast skilful footballers. Defensive organisation is what is missing from City's defence. We could keep throwing money at it, but we wont defend well until we do so as a team which means playing a midfielder with a defensive responsibility. We got away with it yesterday because we were brilliant going forward, and we managed to score from 2 corners which was a miracle

Not a miracle, just a good analysis by Pep.
The main weak point of Monaco is corners/free kicks. Our goal always stay on his line, and we got a small line up. We're very bad at defending them.

Tho, i don't understand why you blame your defense for Monaco's goals and give all credits to your offense for City's goal.

Both defense were horrible, but offense were amazing. But we gave you at least 3 goals yesterday. Stupid fouls who lead to the first goal (even tho all credits goes to Sane), subasic awfull mistake on the second (just after the missed penalty, changing the game). Sidibe doing Sidibe things on the third.

Again, if we come up to second leg with Bakayoko, Fabinho, Subasic, Jemmerson and Sidibe at their normal level, we still got a chance to goes. Only bonus now for us.

I'll say this, a Tevez in his prime would be absolutely perfect for Pep in this team :(

I said the same last night about Kun. If he can repeat that it would be career defining.

He looked a different player once the second goal went in, like the fire was re-ignited in his belly. I haven't seen that Kun Aguero in 2 years.

Yes it was a brilliant game. City's squad could defend. We could play Fernando and Fernandinho in midfield and play two out and out fullbacks. But we chose to emphasise attack. I suspect we will do what you say in the Summer and change defensive players, but I bet we'd have more effect just through playing a specialised defensive midfielder. Sane, jesus, Sterling, KDB, Silva will create chances regardless of whether we play Fernando or Toure. So play Fernando and we'll still score goals and concede less
