Monaco post match

Not a miracle, just a good analysis by Pep.
The main weak point of Monaco is corners/free kicks. Our goal always stay on his line, and we got a small line up. We're very bad at defending them.

Tho, i don't understand why you blame your defense for Monaco's goals and give all credits to your offense for City's goal.

Both defense were horrible, but offense were amazing. But we gave you at least 3 goals yesterday. Stupid fouls who lead to the first goal (even tho all credits goes to Sane), subasic awfull mistake on the second (just after the missed penalty, changing the game). Sidibe doing Sidibe things on the third.

Again, if we come up to second leg with Bakayoko, Fabinho, Subasic, Jemmerson and Sidibe at their normal level, we still got a chance to goes. Only bonus now for us.
yes I thought Monaco were brilliant going forward. l liked your midfielder I think he was called Silva. I also thought Bappe and Falcao were exceptional. They were as good as City's forwards. For me Monaco conceded goals because they emphasised total attack, and it was the same for City. Lots of fans say Citys defenders are rubbish, but that is not true. We could play 4defenders, instruct them to all stay deep, and we could protect with a defensive midfielder, but the coach decides that we are going to emphasise attack over defence.

I think city have a small advantage, but we saw from last night that both teams are very capable of scoring goals. I think City will score again in Monaco.

Congratulations on your team. You have created a new identity and I am sure you will be very successful with this.

Funny how your English is improving with every post. Not so much Allo allo any more, a bit more Salford now.

You are really reaching on this one. It's a bad pass from Willy, nothing else for the first goal, purely self-inflicted. We are pressed all the time and it was simply down to his lack of execution.

The second goal is truly horrific - schoolboy defending with Otamendi caught under the flight of a straight ball.

The third, again, Stones is clearly at fault because he attempts outmuscle Falcao and play out.

If you had simply said the three goals were incredible finishes, nobody in the world could argue.

Regardless, they are all a result of poor defensive lapses.

You actually stopped the defensive press after we scored the first goal, as Pep just dropped Yaya deeper into the hole to receive the ball out from the back - he didn't lose the ball all night.

If anything, it would appear that apart from your fantastic forward momentum, the only real evidence for it was targeting a midfielder playing at left-back.

It was no surprise how the course of the game changed once Zabaleta was introduced and Sagna moved across.

Yaya was brilliant last night still world class when he puts his mind to it

I also think both team will score next round, especially without Glik :)
I only hope an enjoyable game once again (maybe not too much, or we have no chance to keep silva :D) , then it's only bonus for us this year. Letting PSG goes through and focus on league isn't that bad neither.

Thanks mate but you won hardly the first leg, so congratulations to you ;)

I'm really, really interested to see how this psychologically affects Monaco.

They fluffed up a game on Sat in the lead up to this one and could only manage a 1-1 against Bastia(I think).

Then to throw everything they had at us and still be on the back end of a hiding, well I think it's going to hurt them big time.

IF we go there and weather the storm and manage to score first, they will absolutely collapse IMO.

Last night was without doubt a severe shock to their system, and ironically we could equally be sat here saying all the above about ourselves.

They are a great team, and showed it yesterday. But we showed them how we were more than willing to step up and face them on their own terms.

I can answer you with 03/04 Monaco's team.
Both team are young, highly-talented, good manager, ahead in league, still in the two nationals cup, and starting to have choice to do cause physically tired.

We Lost 4/2 at Madrid. We were horribly bad on the second leg at Louis II. Then Madrid scored. Since then, we start to just play our game without any pressure. Ended up 3/1 and goes to next round.

(Tho, we were 10 points ahead on the second place in league, and cause of the C1 final we lost everything :D ).

Really awesome chemistery in this team, i can't describe it in English. That's most 18 friends than a football team. So i'm not worried about that, more about Glik's booking and how will we play...

We really wasnt at our best last night. Baka and Sidibé injuries cost us a lot... Fabinho was totally lost on the pitch too. (But credits must goes to city and pep too for that).

Also, we got more games than you do between the two legs. I Except pep to push ater the first hour of game.

But the goals we conceded last night were down to players getting caught one on one with their opponent. You rarely see Terry, Cahill etc or Smalling, etc get caught one on one as Stones did with Falcao. Stones held up Falcao and almost won it. In a more usual defence, he'd have held him up, and another defender would have come in and mopped up...
You could play Matt Hummels or David Watson or many of the great defenders like Tony Adams and one on one they would get destroyed by fast skilful footballers. Defensive organisation is what is missing from City's defence. We could keep throwing money at it, but we wont defend well until we do so as a team which means playing a midfielder with a defensive responsibility. We got away with it yesterday because we were brilliant going forward, and we managed to score from 2 corners which was a miracle

YES MARVIN!!
I even think that the back four yesterday could have done a lot better if they were allowed to create a more solid structure for them to operate in. Put Vinny in any system and it will improve it because of his leadership skills and ability to organise but still, last nights defensive set-up was so poor.
It appeared that we played a 3 man defence when we had possession, with Dinho inverting to be a central option alongside Yaya and the other three then spreading out across the pitch, but then when we lost the ball they seemed to try and revert to a back 4, leaving transitional moments in between, where they weren't sure where they should be. Stones felt he could only back up to right CB once otamendi was back as left CB but that wasn't always possible because dinho wasn't back as LB as quick as the play needed him to be so there just looked to be confusion, with moment of improvisation. There wasn't a lot to suggest they are individually poor, and don't forget that vinny (and nastasic!) looked so much better under Mancini with a solid defensive structure, than under Pellegrini (who still had a bit more solidity than pep).

We did win though! Yay!

I think he bigger danger for them will be the Summer Transfer window when teams look at their players. They may lose a couple and will have to replace them like Dortmund do.

I did not expect the Fernandinho experiment to continue. Still as you say, we won a fantastic game

Please describe it in French then

Lovely game to watch and hope Monaco win their league

But fuck me you couldn't make a decent defence out the two teams

Both teams look fantastic going forward
All internationals and top quality players. But they are part of a team and the manager has a definite idea of how he wants to play.

Don't agree at all with the comment that we have the right defenders and only our organisation is the problem. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that is completely moronic, although it doesn't surprise me when you look which poster it's from.

We clearly don't have a pair of top level full backs and we quite clearly also lack a top quality, experienced centre half. Organisation for a team like us will come through having a higher quality of defender and it is something we will look to rectify in the summer. The very idea that we 'shouldn't throw money at it' is so stupid, I do often wonder if the person making these comments is a joke account. There is absolutely no way we could survive another year as a top side with Zabs, Sagna, Clichy and Kolarov as the full backs.

I think someone else now just compared us defensively under Mancini to now. Mancini had Kompany, Zabaleta, Kolarov and Clichy in their absolute prime, the former of those just happened to be one of the best centre backs and leaders in Europe. We have no where near close to that quality now. All of them are either worse or can barely play anymore.

Sorry to point out the elephant in the room but, we also had Joe.

So just to get this right as I might be misunderstanding....

You scored 3.

We scored 5.

However... you gifted us 3 goals because of mistakes your defenders made, where as you (tactically somehow) scored 3 very good goals that had nothing to do with bad defending on our part?

Get out of it man, your having a bloody laugh. Two good attacking sides last night, neither of which can defend well that is all there is to it.

I also bet you are about as French as my Grandparents that live in South France!

what a breathtaking game that was. it had it all. both defences were as bad as the attacks were good, some scintillating football on display. must say would take mbappe, bernardo silva and lemar in a heartbeat. Monaco have some awesome players

what happened to the lad that got on the pitch and got KDB's top. I reckon if he had of ran straight back off he would have got away with it but as soon as he ran in circles he went too far. Heavy handed steward mind you. ...Did anyone else see it?
