Southampton (A) Post Match Thread

Why would sane say it wasn't a pk? That means he should have been booked for diving. Weird.
Clear as fuck pk . Pep been warned by the cartels.

Very difficult to open teams up when they play like that. But several times we were in good attacking situations and it looked like a repeat in 2nd half until Kompany scored.
Yeah I was fearing it was going to peater out to a drab 0-0 draw, thank goodness Vinny came up with the goods though :)

I know. But it gets regurgitated every time we have a good win. That could have been a lot trickier tie, but we
were excellent in all bar our finishing. First half anyway.

When the playing surface is good and the pitch large out style is difficult to match. The problems occur on the small pitches like spurs , Everton and Liverpool. Pep , I hope can learn this year that he needs to adapt to these small playing surfaces.

Commentators on BT Sport couldn't make their mind up. Poll said it was a pen. Then after the game. Gerrard said it wasn't. There have been some really blatant obvious pens we haven't had this season. This was one where the ref could not really have given it.

Is the benefit of the doubt meant for the attacker?

I have a suspicion if that was Hazard that went down it would have been a penalty?

What!? Do you live in a world where everything that's not a penalty is a dive? Because the rest of us don't. He didn't appeal for a penalty when he went down, no referee in this country will book him for that.

Just because it's not a penalty, doesn't mean it's a dive.

How vital is Kompany to us ? Brilliant performance by all , navas & de Bruyne superb , Sane a constant threat , great shot in the arm before Arsenal .

What a ridiculously good player in his own right Vinnie is. The world's best in that position in my view - and yes I've seen all the other elite players in that position.. Otamendi looks a better player with Vinnie directing him. Very noticeable how he has the full backs on a leash and therefore they're better positioned when we're under pressure. Without any shadow of a doubt we present a more awkward looking defensive unit with Vinnie.

Its a great day for Komapny, and i liked the link up between aguero(in midfield lol), kev and sane. But that first 50-60 mins was dreadful...thank VK for forcing them to come out really. Nothing was created from open play.

Choosing to ignore GAPING flaws in city's attack against stubborn defenses, just because space has opened up at the end(which AGAIN wouldn't have if Vinny hadn't scored a header) is naive at best. Pep certainly wont be ignoring it...crucially.

I only say this as a couple of people starting gleefully declaring match thread criticism to be "appalling" before the thread ended.

I have to say though if sane gets better at the same rate next season, you could have the next ronaldo on your hands...especially if he gyms it up too.

Have you ever thought that the space opening up in that last 20 minutes or so is a direct result of the us controlling the ball and having the other team running themselves into the ground. Of course it would be brilliant to be a coup,e of gaols up after 20 minutes every game but it is just not feasible. You're watching a different team and a different game to me. Enjoy and be excited about the future.

I watched Vincent's post match NBC interview, and the sense I got was that he was retiring at the end if the season.

There was certainly something wistful about his comments. Hopefully just regret tgat he's missed so many games.

As far as the match was concerned, that second goal is etched on my memory above the other 89 minutes. Gorgeous, sublime football.

to even have this discussion feels wonderful.

end of discussion

None of those are even on the same level as Kompany in any aspect of defending. and today he showed what numerous people on here have been saying all along; his distribution is also world class. There was one cross field ball he played (at least i thin it was him) from the right touch line out to Sane on the left touchline and past the half way line that if Kolarov had played his doubters would have been saying that is why Pep plays Kolarov there. - The difference being is that Kompany can also defend and organise a defence as well
