Guardiola is here for one reason, and one reason only, put the Champions League trophy in the cabinet. That is the goal of Bayern manager, Barca manager, Real Madrid manager...and those clubs are there or thereabouts every year and always win domestic silverware. City got to the Semi once and operate in a country where the football is unforgiving, there is no winter break, and half the games are played in inclement weather every three days against teams who regularly upset the form table.
So, I'm very surprised to hear the nonsense of him supposedly undermining the club with his comments. He knows why he was brought here and he knows that the team's performance has been placed at his feet and it would have been considered completely inadequate to those clubs. In three years at Bayern, he won trophy after trophy, but he didn't win THE trophy, which is why many say he failed there, especially after his predecessor won the treble! At Barca, he took a poor Barca team and won everything in sight. However, Bayern are expected to win almost everything and Barca only ever had one actual opponent for silverware. Not so in England, and long may it continue!
He has spoken repeatedly about City's lack of history in Europe, and how we need to learn and mature in Europe, it is clear that he has a mandate to elevate City's European stature. The ultimate hope, of course, is to put the trophy in the cabinet, but I doubt anyone seriously considered the ridiculous notion that started when he was hired...in the running for four trophies!! Oh, so were Leicester, Spurs and Arsenal!
I know it is squeaky bum time for the CL positions, and we still face two potentially large banana skins, against managers who are no mugs, but some people seem to have forgotten that we are in Year 9 of the project, have since won every domestic honor, with TWO Premierships and a Semi-Final against Real Madrid that we lost by 1 stuffy, deflected goal after playing like shit!
I believe we are still the most successful club in England over the last 5 seasons, and Phase III of The Project is just beginning. Let's not lose perspective, especially those of you who haven't lived the last 50 years of being a City fan.
