Aymeric Laporte

Has improved a lot through the season.
Can understand why he decided to stay..He'd just had a horrible injury in April and Bilbao were very supportive during his injury,so he probably felt it wasn't 'right' to leave just like that, especially being Basque..Should've tried to see how this season goes and at 50 M €,think we would still have paid it this year but signing a new contract with a higher release clause (65 M €) was dumb as it puts off most if not all interested clubs.
With how Bilbao deal with transfers,he might be forced to spend the rest of his career there, killing his international career too before it's even started.

Why would it kill his international career btw ?

As it stands he can still play for France or Spain "in October 2015, he stated that he would consider representing Spain if rejected by France for UEFA Euro 2016.[22]

In August 2016, at the behest of new national manager Julen Lopetegui, Laporte began the process of making himself eligible for Spain.[25] A month later, he was called up to the senior France squad for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and the Netherlands in October,[26] but did not play in either match."

My only worry with Marquinhos is he's very slight and lacks any ariel prowess. Laporte actually makes more sense because he's capable of playing LB too.

Marquinhos can play RB as he did fair bit when David Luiz was there

Yeah he's not dominant aerially but he's adept. around 55% won the last 3 seasons.

Yes it's higher, reportedly €65m now, which is €10m more than last year. However it is set to rise again next season to €70m, so potentially this could be the window he leaves, if it's going to happen.

I'm not sure City can stomach the new buy out though. Certainly it seems we've backed off Sandro due to cost concerns. We do remain interested in Laporte and are still heavily linked, but it may have to take a bit of wrangling from Txiki and the player asking to leave to get the price down to a more acceptable level.

IMO he's the best option we could get, so, on many levels, he's worth it.

Typically they don't sell for less than the release. With this release going up next season I think this is the year he moves. If we don't get him I think he goes to Barca.

I think we should trigger it. It is a lot but I think he is the one to partner Stones for 10 years so it is worth it.

Laporte would be a great signing but Barcelona might just pip us on this one especially with Valverde, who has been appointed Barcelona's new manager.

I'm not getting caught up in transfer sagas this summer but would appreciate if anyone lets me know whether there's any inkling this might be back on?

There is indeed an inkling it might be back on. However I'm only giving you a 0.12% chance it progresses past that.

That ship has long sailed, Laporte will not be an option for Barcelona not least of which because his signing would come at a price Barcelona would be unlikely to pay. Moreover, as others have pointed out, Umtiti will be the LCB for years to come. Marlon Santos will be promoted and an additional CB is needed but they are likely to look elsewhere (Davinson Sanchez) to reinforce depth & rotate

If one takes Bartomeu at his word (ironic I know), he says Robert has had the transfer list for some time and targets are already in progress - presumably without Valverde's knowledge/approval
