Virgil van Dijk

As with lots of players, his big test will be levels of concentration when not in the game constantly. I'm not saying he can't do it but there is no evidence he can. Besides, this will be the sixth Saints player to go up there, £160M will have changed hands and they'll still be lucky to finish top 4.

Not sure what you mean regarding buying players from Southampton. Doesnt matter where the player has come from as long as he's good player.

This is classic bluemoon! The first hint that he prefers the dreaded dippers to us, the keener we are on him! Yesterday it was a national scandal that Txiki was paying £60 million for him and £200 000 pw wages when he's good but by no means brilliant: today Txiki's costing us by not paying a few extra million to land a monster, the best CB in the PL/Europe/the world. "Get your finger out, Txiki!" I'm amazed so many City fans see so much of him as to be so sure that he's so good - I saw him at the Etihad this season and maybe a couple of times on the TV but that's it. IF City were in for him and IF he goes to Liverpool I'll be disappointed but at the moment all I can see is press reporting of what might be a story with a plot like a mystery written by a very drunk Agatha Christie - he wants to play for Guardiola! He's determined to turn everyone down for City! No, he isn't! It's all about 'istry! He wants to play for Liverpool! Will City cool their interest? Will Conte hijack the deal? United were never wanted him anyway. Read tomorrow's predictable episode. And you can bet it'll be written by a KFA.

If Sam is right....We like Dijk but CB isnt seen as a top priority this summer..."if" we decide to sign one, we would like it to be Dijk but have other needs we want to take care of first...

This is the kind of thing I'm trying to put across. City had VVD at top of list but were not 100% set - as far as I know - on signing him

Eactly. City have plans for all positions, but GK, full-back, Silva & forward are priorities. After that, if they want a CB they'd want VVD

I think we can all agree with this assessment. Signing players is an incredibly tough and time-taking job especially when you're signing 2 players from the same club, a player with TPO issues and the other two from Arsenal and Spurs. I'm sure VVD was at the top of the list of "wanted CBs", but we just can't prioritise a CB over GK, FBs and a goal-scoring forward.

They keep buying players from a team that usually finishes 6-10th. Those players won't win you the PL or CL.

They finished one position behind us this season and the Southampton players they've bought in the past are good players, especially mane. I don't really understand your point, but fair enough. Add van dyke and a couple of more players and they've got a squad that will challenge for the prem, I think.

They barely managed 4th without having to play in Europe. Next season with the CL, it won't be easy for them. They also lacked a truly world class player to challenge. IMO it will be between Chelsea, us and spurs.

Fcuk me, he's turned into Beckenbauer, Maldini & Baresi all rolled into one overnight, must be super world class

I think pep wouldn't be that stupid to think that signing a centre back isn't a priority due to kompany playing. It would be a very naive outlook on the squad. We need a centre back, its clearly obvious.

A CB is clearly not a priority (that doesn't mean we wont sign one); obviously another attacking MF, a goal keeper and fullbacks are where Pep wants to spend the bulk of the money this summer. Along with Alexis Sanchez, those positions we need top signings for. My point was that because Kompany has played without injury and played well, a top CB signing is not necessary. I believe we will sign a CB this summer (I hope we do) but imo it doesn't need to a 60m/ Kompany replacement signing. Someone like Pepe from Real Madrid would be a great CB signing on a free transfer this summer, small 2 year contract. Then bring in left-footed CB Lucas Hernandez next summer from Atletico...

I'll be surprised if we sign another centre back as well as Sanchez and/or Mbappe. My money will be on us signing a goalkeeper and fullbacks.

Kompany is a starter if fit, Stones can only get better alongside him and Otamendi has been good this season; Kolarov too has been solid as CB, can see why City aren't prepared to splash all that money on the position.

We must be looking at different squads. I'm looking at one where, in the highly likely event that Kompany spends much of next season out injured, our current options are Stones, Otamendi and a 32 year old converted left back, and, er, that's it. And all 3 of those struggled repeatedly against long ball counterattacking last season. Better, quicker, stronger full backs will unquestionably improve our lot defensively, but for me it would be folly to go into next season without a physically dominant Kompany clone available to us. VVD was that player IMO, cos I can't see Bonnucci leaving Juventus

Well Aleks isn't going anywhere in the final year of his deal and Vinny has earned the right to be number 1 again.

If we do go in for a CB, I guarantee it'll be Boateng first and not VVD.

I agree. Writing off expensive defenders after a short time is why we're currently struggling in those areas.
Stones will only get better. Otamendi is much better than many give him credit for.
If we do sign a new defender, it should be as cover for our captain, whose injury record.... well, it is what it is.
